John L. "Les" Shaw, 91, DuBois, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016.
He was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Clearfield, Pa.; a son of the late Irvin F. and Margaret (DeWalt) Shaw. On Aug. 22, 1947, John married Betty Bellmore at the Presbyterian Church in Curwensville, Pa.
Mr. Shaw served in the United States Army Military Police Corps during World War II, stationed in England, France, and Belgium during his time in the service. After his service, Mr. Shaw worked as a Certified Life Underwriter for the Prudential Insurance Company until his retirement in 1999.
He was an active member of Lakeside United Methodist Church in DuBois.
Mr. Shaw was a member of the American Legion Post #17 and VFW in DuBois.
He loved all kinds of music but especially playing country music at the Foundry in Reynoldsville, and most notably with the "401 North 4th Street Gang" weekly at his residence. He played the banjo and guitar, refurbished many instruments, and was an avid woodworker. Most of all Mr. Shaw was very patriotic and a proud American.
He is survived by a son, John L. Shaw Jr. and his wife Eileen of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Rebecca Braukus and her husband Michael of Dayton, Md., and Nancy Speicher and her husband Ray of Cranberry, Twp., Pa.; five grandchildren: Brian Shaw and wife Esmarie, Kelly Braukus Kamenjar and husband Craig, Gregory Braukus, Eric Speicher, and Molly Speicher; three great-grandchildren: Kaelyn Joy Kamenjar, Chloe and Johnathan Shaw; and best friend, Frances Lingenfelter.
Mr. Shaw was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty B. Shaw, who passed away March 31, 2007; and his brother, Kenneth Shaw.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at the Mohney -Yargar Funeral Chapel Inc, 142 W. Long Avenue, with the Rev. Robert F. Zilhaver officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the DuBois Area Honor Guard. Interment will be in Morningside Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016, and an additional hour of visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of services on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016.
