Pastor John LaVere Shuttleworth III, 51, of Brockway, Pa., (formerly Reynoldsville and Cambridge Springs) was a faithful servant of God and went to be with his Father in Heaven on Jan. 14, 2016, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family.
John was born Oct. 12, 1964, in DuBois, to John Jr. (Jack) and Milly (Custer) Shuttleworth of Reynoldsville. On Aug. 8, 1992, he married Marsha Hathaway.
John was a 1982 graduate of DuBois Area High School. He obtained his bachelor's degree at Clarion University, followed by pursuit of a master's degree in communications at Shippensburg University as well as his juris doctor degree at Dickinson School of Law. He was employed by the State of Pennsylvania as the Crawford County Court Administrator for 17 years. He was also the head pastor of the Brown Hill United Methodist Church in Cambridge Springs, Pa., for the past two years.
In addition to his wife Marsha, John is survived by his four children: Elton, John LaVere IV (Johnny), Emily, and Sara; his parents; his siblings, Julie Westman (Jim) of DuBois, Janet of Bellefonte, and Jim (Jennifer) of DuBois; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents and great-grandparents.
John was an avid hunter, fisherman, loved farming, golf, and was a gifted singer. He starred in several high school musical productions. He was a co-founder of the Reynoldsville Soccer Association as he loved to play as well as coach and referee. He performed in the choir at Reynoldsville Presbyterian Church and enjoyed singing at church fellowship gatherings with his Brown Hill congregation.
There will be a memorial service for his family and friends at his childhood church, the Reynoldsville Presbyterian Church, 608 E. Main Street, Reynoldsville at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016. There will also be a memorial for his congregation, family, and friends at the Brown Hill United Methodist Church, 22742 Wilkie Road, Cambridge Springs, Pa., at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016.
In lieu of flowers, at John's request, donations can be made to his children's educational trust.
