Joseph B. Zuranik of Benezette, Pa., died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, at the DuBois Nursing Home.
He was a son of the late John and Julia (Batcho) Zuranik.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, John Zuranik and two infant brothers; and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Zuranik and Helen Danko.
He was a graduate of Benezette High School.
Joe served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II from 1941-1945 as Motor Machinist Mate 2nd Class. His service included the Asiatic and Pacific Theaters along with the landings on Okinawa.
Joe had worked as a fireman on the railroad between Renovo and Buffalo; as a merchant marine for three years hauling coal and freight from Philadelphia to Rotterdam, Holland and had passed from the east to west coast through the Panama Canal; worked with McCarty Steel Warehouse of Chicago as machine operator; did civil service work for the State of PA and was a Constable in Benezette for 13 years.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Force, American Legion of
St. Marys and VFW of Emporium.
He lived most of his life in Benezette, Pa.
Friends will be received Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, from 4–6 p.m. at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home, Penfield, P. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church of Force, Pa., with Father William Sutherland officiating. Interment will be in St. Cecelia Cemetery, Benezette, Pa. Military honors will be accorded by the Bennett's Valley American Legion Post 978 Burial Detail.
