Joseph M. Watkavitch, age 72, of Baumertown Road, Weedville, Pa., died unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016, at Penn Highlands-DuBois.
Born Nov. 3, 1944, in DuBois, Pa., he was a son of the late John J. and Gula L. (Lovenduski) Watkavitch.
On Dec. 11, 1971, he was married to Esther (Willow). She survives in Weedville.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Brian Watkavitch and fiancée Roxann Ferris of Weedville, Pa., and Melissa (Jason) Swanson of Kersey, Pa.; 10 grandchildren: Amber, Douglas, Jasmine, Ashlynn, Alexis, Alexandria, Adrianna, Jonathan, Jacob, Melinda; two great-grandchildren, Addison and Hayden; and two brothers, Richard (Denise) Watkavitch of Weedville, Pa., and Ronald Watkavitch of Weedville, Pa.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Joseph F. Watkavitch and one brother in infancy.
Joseph was a graduate of Bennetts Valley High School class of 1963.
He served with the PA Army National Guard for 30 years, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He worked as a machinist for several manufacturers of St. Marys, retiring from W&H Machining in 2016.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the "Challengers" shooting team of St. Marys, Bennetts Valley Rod & Gun Club and Pheasants Forever. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, his hunting dogs and especially his grandchildren.
He lived all his life in the Baumertown section of Weedville.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016, and again from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home, Penfield, Pa.
Mass of Christian will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Force, Pa., with Father William Sutherland.
Military honors will be accorded by the Bennetts Valley Legion Post 978 Burial Detail. Interment will be in St. Joseph Church Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to the Bennetts Valley Ambulance or the St. Joseph Church Cemetery Fund and will be accepting online condolences at
