Loretta L. Payne, 74, of Punxsutawney, went to be with her Savior Jesus Christ, on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017.
Loretta was born on Oct. 9, 1942, in Punxsutawney, and was the daughter of the late John Joseph and Naomi (Peg) Wineberg.
On July 18, 1964, she married Bill Payne, who preceded her in death on March 5, 2004.
She was a member of the Paradise United Church of Christ and a graduate of Punxsutawney High School.
Loretta worked at Bell Telephone as a switchboard operator and was a seating hostess at the Pantall hotel until she and Bill started Bill's Appliance Center. Together they ran the Maytag business for years. She also made many crafts and sold at local craft shows.
After her days at Bill's Appliance Center and at Sheetz as a barista, she found her passion and calling in using her sewing, knitting, and crocheting talents to make humanitarian aid items for her daughter, Joey, to take on mission trips. She kept a notebook lovingly recording each item made. Twenty-eight hand-written pages reveal thousands of hand-made pieces like sweaters, scarves, mittens, hats, blankets, toys, and more. In one column she recorded that she had made in total 3,955 LuoPads – washable feminine pads for girls overseas.
Loretta loved spending time with her surviving family; including her three daughters, Terry Vanderpool and husband Eddy of Punxsutawney, Patti Micknis and husband Mike of DuBois, and Joey Payne of Mount Joy; a granddaughter, Krystin Vanderpool Pogue; three grandsons, Alex, Bryce, and Colin Micknis; and a sister-in-law, Theola Amundson.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, at the funeral home with Pastor Barry Fillman and Pastor Audra Krise officiating.
Interment will be in Ridgemount Cemetery, Punxsutawney.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Global Aid Network (GAiN) for the continuation of her love of humanitarian aid and missions. Checks can be written to GAiN, and sent to the GAiN Logistics Center, ?1506 Quarry Road, Mount Joy, PA 17552.
