Mary O. Stuart, age 100, of Stuart Road, Falls Creek, Pa., currently a resident at the DuBois Nursing Home, died on Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, at the nursing home.
Born in Sugar Hill, Pa., on May 24, 1916, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Minnie Cooper Longwell. Mary was married to Eugene C. Stuart and he preceded her in death in April of 1977.
She was a graduate of the Snyder Twp. High School, and a graduate of the Clarion State Teachers College.
Retired, she had been employed as an elementary school teacher. Her career started in a one room schoolhouse in the Smithtown section of Jefferson County, and she retired from the Brockway School District where she taught for many years.
Mary was a member of the Brockway Presbyterian Church, and was active in many women's associations at both the Presbyterian Church in Brockway and Beechwoods Presbyterian. She was a 7th degree member of the Sugar Hill Grange. Mary enjoyed the many activities at the Brockwayville Depot Senior Center and being a volunteer at D.R.M.C., now Penn Highlands DuBois. She also served as a Jefferson County Republican committeewoman.
Mary enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, building puzzles and the many pets she kept and had adopted around her home. She also enjoyed watching all sports in general, and spending time with her family.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy (Charles) Poust of Pine Grove Mills, Pa.; a son, Robert (Lori) Stuart of Falls Creek; five grandchildren: Mary Stuart Barrentine, William Stuart, John Stuart, Caroline Francis, and Robert Poust. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband she is also preceded in death by a son, William Stuart and a sister, Caroline Longwell.
Calling hours will be on Friday, Jan. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. and again on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home Inc. in Brockway. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Christopher McCloskey officiating. Burial will follow in the Beechwoods Cemetery.
