Nancy L. Bomboy, 59, Home, passed away at her home Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, after battling cancer since August 2013. She was surrounded by her husband and pet golden retriever.
Born Oct. 9, 1954, in Alliance, Ohio, she was the daughter of Luther E. Dutrow Jr. and Lois A. Carson Dutrow.
Nancy was a 1973 graduate of Marlington High School and a 1977 graduate of Alliance Beauty College. She also completed a program of Business courses from ARIN in 1989.
Nancy was a licensed cosmetologist in Ohio. She worked for Hills Department Store (Indiana, Pa.) and First Commonwealth Trust Company (Indiana, Pa.).
She also worked as an elementary school Instructional Aide in the Marion Center School District.
In 2000, Nancy began volunteer work upon certification with her golden retrievers, Penny and Copper, as a therapy dog team.
She later became a test evaluator for Therapy Dog International, certifying therapy dogs and handlers.
In 2001, she was co-founder of DRPET (Dogs Routinely Providing Emotional Therapy) a therapy dog group for Indiana County.
During the time she worked with this group between 2001 and 2010, she served as executive director (2001-08), and as president (2001-03).
DRPET teams of certified therapy dogs and handlers visited nursing homes, personal care homes and IRMC. The group started a reading program at the Indiana Free Library as well as the in the Indiana, Penns Manor and Marion Center School Districts.
DRPET teams also conducted dog safety programs for boy scouts, girl scouts and adult groups.
Nancy enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, reading and spending time with her golden retrievers as well as with family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, John, whom she married April 22, 1978; a brother, David Dutrow and wife, Allyson, of Mansfield, Ohio; sister-in-law, Pearl Bundy and her husband, Tom, of Brockport; and brother-in-law, Paul Bomboy and his wife, Brenda, of Hooversville. She is also survived by a nephew, Eric Bundy and wife, Laura, of Madison, Wisconsin; and a niece, Linda Bundy, and fiancé, Allen Minns, of DuBois. Nancy also has numerous cousins in Ohio, Georgia and North Carolina and a great-nephew, Colin Bundy of Madison, Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two daughters, Amanda Joy and Amy Lynn Bomboy.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation from 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at the John A. Lefdahl Funeral Home, Indiana. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at Grove Chapel Lutheran Church with Pastor Dave Wasemann officiating.
