Raymond Baptist Gornati, 85, of Bennett's Valley, Penfield, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, at Christ the King Manor, DuBois.
Born Aug. 29, 1929, in Coal Hollow, he was the son of the late Renaldo and Angelina Bianchi Gornati.
He was married to Victoria Catherine Skrzypek Dec. 2, 1950, in St. Joseph Church. She survives.
Born and raised in Coal Hollow, Raymond lived two years in St. Marys and resided the past 56 years in Penfield.
Raymond served with the US army as Corporal in engineering battalion during the Korean War.
He worked in the Northwest Coal Mines in Toby, did construction for Manno Construction of Ridgway and performed maintenance for Exotic Metals of Ridgway before retiring in 1973.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was also a member of the DuBois VFW, the Weedville American Legion and the Bennett's Valley Sportsmen's Club. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, cooking, baking, making wine and beer and was known for his mechanical and musical inclinations.
In addition to his wife, Victoria Gornati of Penfield, he is survived by four children: Yvonne (Jerry) Pratt of Johnsonburg, Victoria (Kim) Peters of DuBois, Kenneth (Jennifer) Gornati of Penfield and Mark (Connie) Gornati of DuBois; a sister, Anna Agosti of Elizabeth; a brother-in-law, Maurice Cortinovis of Coal Hollow; a sister-in-law, Betty Gornati of Kersey; 10 grandchildren: Angela (Josh) Dubler, Teresa (Chad) Guaglianone, Jessica (Steve) Stritzinger, Shelley (James) Byron, Anita Fink, Michael (Alley) Peters, Bryanna Gornati, Brooke Gornati, Krista and Kara Kentoski; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Rudolph Gornati and two sisters, Adeline Cortinovis and Alda Romanic.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct. 5, and again from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home in Penfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church of Force with the Rev. Fr. William Sutherland as celebrant.
Military honors will be accorded by the Weedville American Legion Post 978 burial detail. Burial will be in St. Joseph Church Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Bennett's Valley Ambulance or St. Joseph Church.
