Richard L. "Dick" Smith (Grampa), age 83, of Beechtree Road, Falls Creek, Pa., died on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 201,7 at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Born on Oct. 23, 1934, in Beechwoods, he was the son of the late Donald and Asenath Groves Smith. On July 11, 1953, he was married to Virginia DeSantis and she survives.
Dick was employed at Brockway Glass for over 40 years, retiring as plant engineer. In 1965 he and Virginia bought the Tastee Freeze in Brockway which they operated for many years until selling to Dean and Wanda.
He was a member at St. Tobias Church in Brockway. He also was a past board member at the Brockway Ambulance.
Dick enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Florida. He was a genuine people person and enjoyed talking with others. He especially enjoyed meeting friends at Morelli's Restaurant for coffee.
In addition to his wife he is also survived by four sons: Dean (Wanda) Smith and Gene (Diane) Smith, both of Brockway, Michael Smith and partner Thom McDonell of Pittsburgh, Greg Smith of Beechwoods; five grandchildren: Kelly Smith, Desiree Fremer, Holly Wilcox, Heidy Freund and Haley Smith. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by a son, Richard; a grandson, Colby Smith; two sisters, Frances and Geraldine; and a brother, Bill.
Calling hours will be on Friday, Nov. 3, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home Inc. in Brockway. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Tobias Church in Brockway with Msgr. Charles Kaza presiding. Burial will follow in St. Tobias Cemetery. A Vigil Service will be held Friday evening at 8:45 p.m., also at the funeral home.
