Ruthann Vrahas, DuBois, died peacefully at home with her family Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014. She had a long and wonderful life and was grateful to have stayed in her home until the end.
She was born Sept. 5, 1928, and grew up in DuBois. She graduated from DAHS in 1947.
She graduated from Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh and began a career as a registered nurse.
She enlisted as an officer in the Air Force during Korean War and was stationed in New Mexico and Alaska.
Being in the Air Force changed her life but, out of love for her family, she eventually returned to work as a nurse at the DuBois hospital. There she met Mark Vrahas who was a patient.
It was love at first site for Mark; to win her over he brought Nick's hotdogs to the nuns who were very protective of her. They married in June of 1956.
She is survived by her husband, Mark Vrahas; her brother, James Riss of Philadelphia; her three children: Lynn Coleman of Pittsburgh, Mark Vrahas of Boston, Amy Hall of Ashburn, Va.; and her nine grandchildren.
As per her request, her remains were donated to the Humanity Gifts Registry.
A memorial service will be held at noon, Saturday, Nov. 28, at the Treasure Lake Community Church. A celebration of her life will be held immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial donations be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation,
