Shirley May (Chittester) Britton, age 89, of Monroeville, Pa., formerly of Beechwoods, Pa., died on Jan. 19, 2018.
Shirley was born Sept. 1, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Albert Chittester and Margaret Jones Chittester of Falls Creek, Pa. She was married for 54 1/2 years to the late Robert J. Britton, RD1 Beechwoods/Falls Creek, Pa. Shirley, also known to many as "Granny," moved to Monroeville in October of 2005 to live with her granddaughters, Elizabeth and Susan Burkett.
She is survived by her four children: Peggy (Tom) Burkett, Barbara (Howard) Pollitt, Robert Britton, and Nancy Britton, 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sister, Eleanor (Bob) Hepler, and was preceded in death by her sister, Lois (Ben) Huffman, brother, Albert (Jessie) Chittester, and an infant brother, Leonard. In addition, she loved her many nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends.
She was a longtime member of the Allens Mills United Methodist Church in Hazen, Pa., and transferred her membership to the Monroeville United Methodist "MUM" Church for the last 11 years. She enjoyed attending the monthly Senior Saturdays' luncheons at MUM Church. Shirley attended the Beechwoods School and graduated from the Falls Creek High School. She loved being a homemaker and traveling with her husband Bob after his retirement. She enjoyed poetry and in fact, had a book of her poems published for her 80th birthday. In later years, she loved coloring, music, word search puzzles, and Woodside Place field trips to local art museums. Granny was well known for sharing her one-liners, like on a cloudy day: "We'll have to make our own sunshine today", and after someone mentioned a large word, "How do you spell that? – T-H-A-T!"
Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 22, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Jobe Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., (Monroeville/Plum Chapel), corner of (445) Beatty Rd. and 48 North, Monroeville (412-856-4747).
