Violet E. Nicholls, 88, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at Penn Highlands Healthcare, DuBois.
Born Jan. 19, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Florence Stanford.
Violet was educated in Barbados, British West Indies. She was married to the late Asquith D'emerton.
She worked as a seamstress in New York City and was a member of the Altar Guild and Women's Auxiliary at Calvary and St. Cyprian Episcopal Church in Brooklyn.
In DuBois, she was a member of the Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, needlepoint, and embroidering things for her family and friends.
Violet is survived by five children: Stephanie Murphy of Bangor, Maine; Jonathan Nicholls and his wife, Deborah, of Brockton, Mass.; Leslie Shorts and her spouse, David, of DuBois; Francesca Francois and her spouse, Georges-Evens, of New York; and Francisca White and spouse, James, of Monroe, N.Y.; eight grandchildren: Brendon Murphy, David Shorts II, Nichollette Shorts, Messiah and Noah Francois, and Jabari Najee, Karimah Nailah and Jalil Naeem White; as well as four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Violet was also preceded in death by her siblings: Sylvia, George, Evelyn and Charles. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Friends and family will be received from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at the Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene in DuBois. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 4 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Kevin Barrett officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, N.Y.
