Wayne "Hirkey" L. Shaffer, 82, St. Marys, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 29, 2018 at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys after a brief illness.
Born August 11, 1935, in Emporium, he was the son of the late Wayne Sylvester and Edith (Miller) Shaffer.
On January 3, 1954, he married Emily Sue (Bergstrom) Shaffer in the Trinity of Evangelical Church in DuBois. They celebrated 55 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on August 17, 2009.
Wayne spent much of his childhood between DuBois and his grandparents' farm in Dents Run, Pa. He graduated from Sandy Township High School in 1953. Wayne and his brother, Dick, were part of the group who built and raced dirt track stock cars in the early-to-mid-fifties in the DuBois Area. In 1960, Wayne moved his young family to St. Marys for a job promotion with the Riverside Market Company. He and his family resided there until his retirement after 48 years of service with Riverside-BiLo. For many years, Wayne was a well-known and liked bartender in several clubs and bars in St. Marys. He and his wife, Emily Sue, returned to the DuBois area after his retirement to live at Sabula Lake until the Spring of 2015. He had a fondness for his pets, especially his dog, Darby. Wayne was Methodist by faith.
Mr. Shaffer is survived by three children, Stephen (Susan) Shaffer of St. Marys, Denise (Patrick) Sarnoski of Truman, and Cynthia (Anthony) Gerg of St. Marys; 11 grandchildren: Eric, Ryan, and Kelly Shaffer, Jason, James, Curtis, and Michael Sarnoski, Derrick and Douglas Dills, Danielle Tabacsko, and Jonathan Gerg; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean (Ray) Vandervort of Brockway and Shirley Smith of East Bloomfield, N.Y.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a brother, Richard "Dick" Shaffer; and a daughter, Valerie Ann Shaffer.
