William Byron Shaffer, 85, 9534 Liberty Road, Frederick, Md., formerly of Reynoldsville and Brookville, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.
Born Dec. 29, 1929, in Reynoldsville, he was a son of the late William and Mayme Bliss Shaffer. He was married to Elizabeth McDonald Shaffer. She survives and lives in Frederick, Md.
He retired as the Jefferson County Superintendent of Highways after 25 years of service with PennDOT to take care of his aging parents.
He served as an SA in the Navy during the Korean War.
He was Protestant by faith.
Byron was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved his wife, Elizabeth, of 65 years.
He also loved raising and riding horses.
He is also survived by two daughters, Marlene (James) Finger of Rutland, Vt. and Joyce Zimmerman (Donald Abrecht) of Frederick, Md.; six grandchildren: Richard Bussard and Byron Finger of Rutland, Vt., Douglas Zimmerman and Adam Zimmerman of Brookville, Ryan Zimmerman of Greencastle and Amanda Zimmerman of Frederick, Md.; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Darwin Shaffer of Tennessee and Dennis M. Shaffer of Reynoldsville.
Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015, at the Bernard P. Snyder Funeral Home in Reynoldsville. A funeral service will follow at noon Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Henry officiating. Burial will be in the Lakelawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Reynoldsville. The DuBois Area Honor Guard will provide military honors Saturday at the funeral home.
