William L. "Fuzzy" Gardner, 74, Bennetts Valley Highway, Byrnedale, died early Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, at his home.
Born Dec. 31, 1939, on Gardner Hill, Weedville, he was the son of the late Clyde Thomas and Audrey Ives Gardner. He was married to Gertrude F. Samick Gardner on May 4, 1963. She survives.
He was a graduate of Weedville High School and lived all his life in Bennetts Valley.
He served in the Navy from 1957-60 including 19 months in Newfoundland and onboard the USS Aucilla in Norfolk, Va.
He worked at PMP of St. Marys for 39 years.
He was a member of Gardner Hill Church and the American Legion and enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
Survivors also include five children: William F. (Julie) Gardner of Virginia Beach, Va., Catherine (Alvin) Schatz of Weedville, Richard "Ricky" (Angel) Gardner of Weedville, Andrew John (Sandie) Gardner of Gardner Hill, Weedville and Amy (Donald) Gray of Caledonia; a brother, Sam (Aileen) Gardner of Waterford; four sisters, Laura Lovenduski of Force, Pearl (Tony) Biondi of McDonald, Jane (Ralph) Nesbitt of Crown Point, Ind., Ruth Challingsworth of Conneaut Lake; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by four brothers: John in infancy, Frank "Buzzy," James and Lawrence Gardner; four sisters: Eva Armstrong, Margaret Narby, Edna "Jake" Pelton and Flora Barker; two brother-in-laws, Birch Challingsworth and Vincent "Web" Lovenduski.
Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 and from 10-11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home, Penfield. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 26, at the funeral home with Pastor Bryon Kleppinger. Military honors will be accorded by the Valley Legion Post 978 Burial Detail. Burial will be in Gardner Hill Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Bennett's Valley Ambulance, the Community Nurses Inc., Hospice or the Valley American Legion Post 978.
