William L. "Bill" Pontius, 84, Williamsport, passed away at Manor Care North on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014, after a five-year battle with cancer.
Born Dec. 16, 1929, in Flint, Mich., Bill was the son of the late John F. Pontius and Katherine M. Srp Pontius.
A 1947 graduate of Blairsville High School, he studied audiology at Bloomsburg University and eventually earned his Master's degree in the subject from the University of West Virginia.
Bill was a long-time employee of Merck Pharmaceuticals and later an audiologist in Selinsgrove, before moving to Williamsport where he retired from Williamsport Regional Medical Center.
Bill was an avid reader, a talented woodcarver, photographer and cook. He enjoyed completing daily crossword puzzles and spent a lot of time in the library – he was known to read a book a day.
In addition to his affection for reading, he was also a music lover and will be remembered for his endearing laugh. In his 50s, he became a member of the Williamsport Landlord Association, and following his retirement, joined the city's Lucky Lincoln Investment Club.
Along with his various hobbies, Bill also enjoyed traveling and spent time living in Australia. On special occasions, he volunteered in the church kitchen serving meals.
Mr. Pontius is survived by his wife, Donna Bailey Pontius; his daughter, Michele Adams, of Lebanon; and three stepsons: Richard R. Smith of Danville, Jason Bailey of DuBois and Daniel Bailey of Stephens City, Va.; several nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his second wife, I. Gay Mader Pontius; and his sister, Nancy Lutz.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 6. at the First United Methodist Church, 2 Ross St., Williamsport.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
