John E. Cox

John E. "Jack" Cox, 86, of Millville died on Monday, June 17, 2013, at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home, after an extended illness.

Born in Millville, Mr. Cox was a lifelong resident. Mr. Cox served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific on the USS LCSL111 Gun Boat. He crafted a scale model of his gun boat, which is now on display in the Great Lakes Naval Station. Jack also was the organizer of 22 Navy reunions for his ship. Jack was retired as a mold maker for Kerr Glass, serving there more than 35 years. Jack is a member of the Millville Elks Lodge No. 580, American Legion Post No. 82, Millville VFW and the Millville Army Air Field Museum.

Jack was a very talented and well-known musician, playing with his daughter Jackie and friend Lowell Calkin in the Jack Cox Trio and JC Combo for many years. Jack also played with the Brown Street Chowder Society. He was very accomplished on the guitar and organ.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 66 years, Mary; son, Edward J. Cox Sr. (Joan) of Millville; four daughters, Cathy Stanek (Scott) of Bridgeton, Dian Priest (Alexander) of Landisville, Jackie Cather (Cole) of East Windsor and Brenda McNiss (Mike) of Millville; two sisters, Elaine Robbins (Kenny) and Catherine Amaranto, all of Millville; 10 grandchildren, Michelle Glenn (Derick), Ed Cox Jr. (Linda), Julie Coward (Jack), Michael Stanek Jr. (Patricia), Jonathan Erber (Amy), Greg Erber Jr., Jennifer Giunta (Peter), Michael McNiss Jr. (Shannon), Sean McNiss and Jenna Priest (Josh); 13 great-grandchildren, with one on the way!

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Rocap Shannon Memorial Funeral Home with burial to follow in Cumberland County Veterans Cemetery, Hopewell Township. Friends may call this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the NJ Veterans Memorial Home, 524 N.W.
