Sara Maskarinec Obituary

Sara (Chamberlain) Maskarinec, 86, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, March 21, 2015, following a brief illness. A life-long resident of Towanda's First Ward, Sara was born April 17, 1928, the daughter of the late Walter and Blanche (Place) Chamberlain.

In earlier years, Sara worked for GTE Sylvania. She later worked as a secretary for the Towanda Area School District, the Towanda Public Library and as an aid for the Food Preparation Program at the Bradford County Vo-Tech School.

Sara was an avid volunteer working as a Girl Scout leader, an American Red Cross First Aid instructor and with many other local organizations. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Towanda Country Club. Sara also enjoyed many hobbies, including sewing, quilting, ceramics, making porcelain dolls and working in her flower gardens.

Surviving are her children, Blanche (Neil) Wilson, Marjorie Iglio and Michael (Nancy) Maskarinec; grandchildren, Peter (Tricia) Wilson, Nicole (Shane) Mize, Dr. Sara Iglio (Jeremy) Haloskie, Dr. Caroline Iglio (Robert) Cusson, Michael John Maskarinec, Alexis and Ashley Kuzma; eight great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Robert McGovern and Rex Allen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Maskarinec; her seven siblings, Walter (Pete) Chamberlain, Donald Chamberlain, infant Joseph Chamberlain, Marjorie Milan, Harriett Hourtz, Ellen McGovern, Patrea (Patty) Allen; and a son-in-law, Joseph Iglio.

A Requiem Mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Sara's birthday, April 17, officiated by Rev. Maureen Hipple, at the Christ Episcopal Church, 1 Main St. in Towanda. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests those who wish may consider a memorial in Sara's name to the Christ Episcopal Church, 1 Main St., Towanda PA 18848, the Towanda Public Library, 104 Main St., Towanda PA 18848, the Bradford County Historical Society, 109 Pine St., Towanda, PA 18848, or to a charity of one's choice.

Margie, Blanche ,Michael & families, I am saddened today to learn of your Mom's passing. I am so glad I got to visit with her two weekends ago. Your Mom allways made all of the neighborhood kids feel welcome at your house. And let us do whatever, within reason, to have fun!; I remember many good times! Your Mom was a leader in the neighborhood and because she took on roles like being a Girl Scout leader, many of us had more experiences and opportunities than we would have had otherwise. She helped me go to sailing camp and to this day I still enjoy sailing and own two boats of my own. Thank you Sara for encouraging myself and all of us kids to try new things. Hey Lady...you were a great inspiration and will be missed!

Blanche, Margie and Mike....so very sorry for the loss of your mom. I have so very many fond memories her! I loved being over at your house for mini-hose and remember your mom with girl scouts. My grandma's neighbor! A Fourth Street icon for sure! She was a wonderful woman who will always be with you in your hearts.
