Evelyn M. "Ossie" Chacona

Evelyn M. "Ossie" Chacona, 101, of Sayre, passed away on May 25, 2016 at her home.

She was born on Aug. 4, 1914, the daughter of the late William and Mildred Oswald.

Ossie was born in Sayre, Pa., and remained a resident of Sayre for her entire life. Ossie and her husband, Nicholas owned and operated Chacona's Restaurant in Sayre for over 70 years, up until their retirement. Their restaurant was the place where all the kids gathered to enjoy their famous hot dogs with meat sauce and french fries with gravy. Many long time friendships with the Chaconas and others were formed sitting at the counters and booths of their restaurant. Ossie was the First Lady of Sayre for over 28 years. In 2014 on Ossie's 100th Birthday, Sayre Borough declared Aug. 4 as "Ossie Chacona Day." She was honored and awarded for all her accomplishments over the years in her community. She was a long time member of the Church of the Epiphany.

She is predeceased by her husband Nicholas Chacona in 2009 and her sons Marcus and William Chacona.

Evelyn is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Kona Chacona of Rochester, N.Y., and Chris Chacona of Sayre, Pa.; her grandchildren, Nick Chacona, Debbie Urevich, Michelle Kelly, Victoria Stuewe, Kelly Chacona, Shannon Chacona and Keisha Hotaling; 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at the Church of the Epiphany, 304 South Elmer Ave., Sayre, Pa. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. at the Church with the Rev. Andrew Hvozdovic officiating.

Burial will be in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Pa.
