James Lyon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 29, 2009.
NEW BERLIN - James "Bud" Lyon, 76, passed away Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009.
James David Davis was born to Anna Cathryn Davis on April 4, 1933, in Utica. Shortly thereafter, he was adopted by Jay and Eva Lyon and became known as James Davis Lyon, also known as Bud Lyon. At the age of 8, Bud and his parents moved to 63 North Main St., in New Berlin. This is where he resided throughout his lifetime.
Bud graduated from New Berlin Central School in 1951, where he was active in all sports. He also sang in the school quintet that entertained both on radio and in school.
September 1951, he joined the Air Force and served four years during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Okinawa.
Upon arriving home, he eventually began working for A.C. Neely Fuel Company for 11 years. After obtaining his license to sell life insurance, he went to work for Metropolitan Life and remained there for 21 years. In April 1989, he went to work for New York Central Mutual where he worked for 16 more years.
Bud was a member of the New Berlin Fire Department and also a dedicated member of Frank H. Arnold American Legion for over 50 years. In addition, Bud was active in New Berlin Little League coaching, he was the Youth Days parade announcer for nearly 35 years, and also participated on the board of Dollars For Scholars at New Berlin Central, currently UV Central School.
One of Bud's favorite things was spending time in Beaver River and being a part of the New Berlin Sportsmen Club. Much fun was had hunting and camping with the guys in Beaver River for over the last 50 years.
Another favorite past time was racing, both dirt and NASCAR. He was a part of the pit crew for "Pop" Wilcox and always followed racing closely.
Bud most enjoyed playing cards with the guys down to the Legion, coffee breaks with Gordy and Jerry, and "board meetings" down to John's Barber shop.
But most known about Bud was the joy he got from his friends and acquaintances. Whether it be in school activities, at work, in the community, with his family, or just having visits along the streets of New Berlin.
Bud is cherished by his wife of 41 years, Mary (Houk) Lyon. He is also survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Amy Lyon; his daughter, Jannette Lyon; and his two grandchildren, Clayton James and Derek Jake Lyon. In addition, Bud is survived by many loving in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church. Interment with military honors will follow in the Fairview Cemetery in New Berlin.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Frank H. Arnold American Legion Post 348 of New Berlin, the New Berlin Volunteer Fire Department or the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin.
Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home LP, New Berlin.

It's great to see so many fine tributes to Bud. He had such a positive impact on so many lives. Bud was always clear about what was important in his life. He was so proud of Mary, Jay, & Jan & felt as lucky to have them in his life as they felt to have him in theirs. Bud's family, friends, & community will miss him dearly - he was an inspiration to all who knew him.

I'm so sorry to hear of Bud's passing. He was a good man that often thought of others above himself. I remember one high school baseball season that was nearly canceled when there were no takers to run the team. "Coach" Lyon stepped up the plate and took over the reigns. That was the most fun a lot of had playing any year of high school sports. He will be dearly missed.

Mary and family, words can never say how much we will miss Uncle Bud. We have so many great memories of him. He is the only man I know that carried a Kodak instamatic camera with him at all times. He was a great listener and always offered good sound advice when called upon to do so. He lived an honest and caring life and had no enemies that I know of. The Town of New Berlin was a better place to live because of him!! There aren't too many kids that grew up there that he didn't have a positive influence in their life. I know that he and my dad and the rest of the boys are probably having one heck of a party up there, I would love to hear the deer stories!! You will all be in our thoughts and prayers over the next several weeks and beyond. We love you all.

Mary, Jay,Jan & family. I knew Bud from when he helped me become the home run leader in Little League for Sliter's Giants. He treated me with the same friendliness then as he did all through my 63 years. Your loss is immense but thank God you knew one of the finest guys on Earth as Husband, Dad and Grandpa. To know Bud was to love him dearly. Godspeed Bud.

Mary,

I'm so sorry for your loss. Bud was one of those unique individuals that always greeted you with a smile and was willing to talk sports at any time. He was truly one of the nicest guys I've known over these many years and always enjoyed greeting him during my recent summer visits: "Hey, the other Bud."

He will be missed.

We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Bud was a terrific man. I can still see him seating at the Edmeston Baseball games the year the boys went to states. Or at the Red Apple eating toast. He always had a positive word to say. Always asked about everyone. You all have so many cherished memories that will help you. Bud was very proud of all of you! All of you are in our prayers.

To "BUD'S" Family
My thoughts and prayers are with you, and I know it's never enough when you lose someone you love. Bud was my little league coach, he sold me Met Life Ins and he was one of my favorite fans when I raced. It was always a pleasure to see Bud's smile. He made a difference in my life, and I'm sure he made a difference in many others. We all will miss him as it was such a pleasure to know him and we will never forget him. Bless you all.

I'm so sorry for your loss and the pain you're feeling. I remember he always being present for our sporting events. He was so supportive even when there wasn't a whole lot to cheer about. I still have the miniature laminated replica of my high school diploma he and another individual provided for free to all of us from the class of 1987. Rest in peace, Mr. Lyon.

Mary, Jay & Jan & kids,

No words will relieve the pain you're feeling at this time of loss but please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers at this time. He was a very special person and has touched many lives through out his life.

U. Bud was my main man when I was a young chick. He came to visit every Tuesday night for dinner and to watch "Gunsmoke". Well, I wanted to make him and my dad supper. I did--it was spaghetti--it was more like spaghetti made to look like lasagne noodles. He ate it and did it without letting on that it wasn't quite so good. I think I loved him for that the most. In any case, as the years have gone on he's never failed to say "Hey Shar, do you remember the time you made me spaghetti". I do and I always will.(Jack told him I hadn't changed much) I'm sure he and my dad are up there laughing themselves silly right now over that terrible dinner. He sure will be missed.

All our love & deepest sympathy,

We are so sorry for your loss of "Buddy". We will forever remember Bud for his dedication to family, our time as neighbors, Bud's deer hunting trip to the south end of town, the fun on the golf course, just sitting around and chatting, and the trips to Myrtle Beach (remember the toll booth?), but most of all we will always remember Bud as a very special friend. Dear Mary & Family,

You are in our thoughts and prayers.
How sad it is to learn of Bud's passing. He was a friend from childhood - even after I hit a baseball through his front window at the age of 9 or 10. We grew up not only participating in all the sports New Berlin had to offer but also dancing, singing and spending lots of time together. He was an "extra special person" that brightened the lives of many. Visiting New Berlin in the future won't be the same. We will miss Bud.

When I moved to New Berlin as a freshman,it was Bud, a junior, who took me under his wing. Bud will always live in my heart for this act alone. As time went on, we became the type of friends that time apart was nothing. We could plug in and know each other as if we had parted the day before. May God take him into his loving arms and give him greater joy in His realm. Charlie Johnson

Dear Mary, Jay and Jan,
My thougths and prayers are with you and yours during this time of great sorrow. A devoted family man and treasured community member has gone on before all of us, paving the way.
I will always remember as a child riding my bike down the street and he telling me to be careful; or marching in the Youth Days parade looking up to see his smile as he announced us (Jay you do your dad proud), baton twirling with Jan, and as I grew older the memories were just as cherished, such as the long days at Motocross serving hamburgs and hotdogs with the legion, New Berlin Fire Department numerous activities, and just being himself, concerned for his community who he thought of as his extended family members.
God bless you Bud and God bless your your family. The memories of your will last a lifetime and beyond.
