John Brachas Obituary

Groton - John Trean Brachas passed away Dec. 6, 2020, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital after a brief battle with COVID-19. Born July 21, 1938, in New London, he was the son of Trean "Tony" Brachas and Athena (Pappas) Brachas. John is survived by his brother George Brachas of New London; daughter Tami Bree of Uncasville; and three grandchildren, Niko Bree and Joseph Brachas of Uncasville and Justin Brachas of East Berlin. John was predeceased by both his parents and his son, Anthony "Tony John" Brachas.

He graduated from New London High School, then served in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the Cutter Mariposa. After the Coast Guard, he worked at Creem Auto in New London, and then Lathrop Porsche Audi in Groton as the parts manager for many years before his retirement.

In his younger years, he was very athletic - in the winter, you would find him in the gym, and in warmer weather, he loved the beach. John was an avid swimmer and was part of a traveling diving team that performed at Ocean Beach in the pool in the 70s. He also loved motorcycles and used to race them. John had a passion for all genres of music, but Motown was his favorite. He was happiest when singing with his daughter while riding by the beach.

He spent his last 15 years at the Groton Regency, living on the retirement side of the facility and was well loved. Strong in his faith, he attended church regularly. He was a kind and gentle man and his smile was contagious. He was also a "Friend of Bill W" for many years. Being generous in nature, he would help anyone that crossed his path. His love will live on through his daughter and grandsons.

Due to COVID, services will be private. There will be a graveside service held at 11 a.m. Saturday Dec. 19, at Cedar Grove Cemetery in New London. All are welcome to attend. Please use social distancing and wear masks. Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements.
