Elting H. Smith

Essex ­- Elting H. Smith died July 16, 2010, in Essex, one week short of his 93rd birthday.

He was born in Yonkers, N.Y. on July 23, 1917, to the late Leon Hills and Elizabeth Elting Smith. He was the beloved husband of Angela (known as Anne) Barry Smith of Essex.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Deborah W. Smith and her husband, Alfred Tetrault, of Vienna, Va., his son, Elting (Ned) H. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Megan Thorn, of Cumberland, Maine, and his daughter, Barbara R. Jones and her husband, Richard B. Jones, of Nairobi, Kenya. He also leaves five grandchildren, Hannah, Tobin and Benjamin Jones, and Louisa and Peter Smith.

A graduate of Princeton, class of 1940, and Yale Law School, class of 1947, he spent the war years in the South Pacific with the 77th Infantry Division as a captain of the field artillery. He practiced law with the firm of Gwinn and Pell in New York City, then became real estate counsel for J.C. Penney Company. He was active in local government in Pelham Manor, N.Y. for many years, serving in many capacities, ending as mayor. Retiring in 1981 he moved to Old Lyme, where he was a member of the Old Lyme Country Club and the Old Lyme Beach Club. He moved to Essex Meadows in Essex in 2003.

A memorial service will be held at 12 noon Friday, July 23, at the Old Lyme Congregational Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Old Lyme Congregational Church or the Old Lyme-PGN Library would be greatly appreciated.
