Mary Alma Carlough Obituary
Waterford - Mary Alma (Krauth) Carlough, 79, of Waterford, beloved wife of 60 years to Frederic C. Carlough, entered eternal life on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, after a lengthy illness. She was a devout Roman Catholic, and a communicant of St. Paul Church. She became born again in February, 2013.

She was born Nov. 10, 1934 to William B. and Alma (Marcoux) Krauth of Waterford. Mary's mother died when she was a toddler, and she was raised by her aunt Rose and uncle Theodore Krauth (both deceased) of Waterford. She, and her cousin, Theodore "Teddy" Krauth, of Florida, were like brother and sister. Mary has a half sister, Doris Pongetti of Florida, they survive her.

She married Frederic C. Carlough on Aug. 8, 1953. Together they raised their only son, Curtis Carlough, also of Waterford. Mary's daughter-in-law, Judith (Cook) Carlough, brought two beautiful children to their family; Michael P. (Guian) Kaminski Jr. and Anna Elizabeth Kaminski. They all survive her.

As a lifelong resident of Waterford, Mary loved everything about Waterford. She volunteered on many commissions, organizations and committees; too numerous to mention all. She and Fred were voted "Waterford's Family of The Year 1998", and Mary was voted "Waterford's Volunteer of the Year 2005".

Mary was a 1952 graduate of New London High School; she worked at the former Union Bank and Trust, the former Radway Dairy, followed by 26 years as a teacher's aide and paraprofessional in Waterford Public Schools, before retiring in 2003. She adored the children, and they adored her.

The Family wishes to extend their appreciation and gratitude to her longtime aide, Barbara Gillingham, and all of her caregivers at Angel Care, LLC Niantic, The VNA, and The Hospice Care Staff, for coordinating and assisting with Mary's wishes to stay home throughout her illness.

Kindly omit flowers and fruit baskets. Any donations made in Mary Carlough's name should be in keeping with her wishes: Oswegatchie Fire Department, Waterford Senior Services, Waterford Republican Committee, Waterford Week Committee, The Visiting Nurse Association of Southeast CT, or Center for Hospice Care, Southeast CT.

Visiting hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at The Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, at St. Paul Church, Rope Ferry Road, Waterford. Interment will follow in Jordan Cemetery, Boston Post Road, Waterford.
