Susan Aalund Obituary

New London - Susan "Suzy" Beatrice (Quick) Aalund, 83, of New London, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 5, 2016.

She was born in Amityville, N.Y., to Stephen and Madeline Quick, and grew up in Far Rockaway, N.Y.

She is survived by her daughters, Ingrid Skinner and her husband, John and Astrid Aalund; granddaughters, Lisa, Karen, Rachel and Aryel; and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her brother, Robert S. Quick; and "son-in-law", John Brosnan.

After graduating Far Rockaway High School, Suzy began her career in professional art, first as a window dresser for J. C. Penny and as cartoonist and assistant editor for CQ ham radio magazine. The range of her artistic talent included many media and she painted in oil, acrylic and watercolor. Additionally she created drawings, satirical cartoons, sculptures and porcelain dolls.

In the 1970s she earned high acclaim as an artist specializing in paintings of a nautical nature. Having always lived by the water she was inspired by the northeast coastline and painted many scenes of Cape Cod and Long Island. Her painting career brought her to Mystic, where she settled with her husband and daughters. She became widely collected and won numerous awards including first prize at the National Miniature Show in 1973. Suzy participated in several juried exhibitions and one-artist showings and was a charter member of the American Society of Marine Artists. Several of her paintings were published by the New York Graphic Society. Her works, described by some as having modified naturalistic realism, are in many private and corporate collections, both locally and abroad.

Other interests included crafts of all kinds, especially yarn and needlework, sewing, and books on all subjects.

Family and friends will observe a private memorial.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mystic Seaport or Thames River Community Service.
