Donald Edward Turner Obituary
Donald Edward Turner

- - Donald Edward Turner passed peacefully February 6, 2019 with Jane, his loving wife of 68 years, and family by his side. Also surviving are his daughters Jane (Jon) Votel and Kathy (Dan) Guess, grandchildren Eric (Tina), Ross (Alexis) and Brennan (Kerry McLernan) Votel; Emily, Grant and Allison Guess; Jack Turner and 4 great-grandchildren Hannah, Katelyn, Clare and Ray Votel. He was preceded in death by his son Donald (Dee) in 2009, a loss felt every day.

Don grew up in New York City. He proudly served his country as a Marine, enlisting immediately upon graduation from Bayside High School. He entertained many with his stories of his time in Quantico and Hawaii especially the witnessing of the historic 1946 Tsunami. He then made his way to San Francisco where he met the love of his life Jane Rothchild on her 16th birthday. He graduated from the University of San Francisco, started his career in sales with Benjamin Moore & Co. and landed in Colorado for 25 years after which time he retired to Palm Desert.

His greatest joy was derived from time spent with his family and friends. He cherished Christmas in Breckenridge for the past 47 years, was thrilled as generations of family visited the desert and looked forward to Summers in Lake Tahoe with the Turner family's dearest friends, the Daschbachs. He never missed a Baptism, First Communion, graduation or wedding. His recent participation in the Kentucky Derby festivities brought many new friendships which will be cherished by all those whom he met for years to come.

Don's Catholic faith was the core of his existence providing strength and solace in difficult times. It was this compassion that led to his many discussions with those afflicted with alcohol addiction. He was ready at the drop of a hat to walk with the person on their path to recovery often citing his wise wisdom of "this too shall pass."

Mass of Christian burial will be February 15, 9:00 a.m., Sacred Heart Church, Palm Desert. Internment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma.

In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to New Perceptions, 1 Sperti Drive, Edgewood, Kentucky, 41017 (Don's granddaughter, Emily, attends the Learning Center at New Perceptions, an organization providing services to individuals with special needs.)
