Gen Hornak
Palm Desert - Gen Hornak, 89, of Palm Desert died Nov. 30 near her home in Palm Desert Greens ("PDG").
Gen was born in 1929 in Scottdale, Pennsylvania. She was married to Duke Hornak of Wall, PA, for 52 years, until his death in 2004.
She earned an RN/BS in Nursing at Duquesne University in 1952. Gen belonged to Alpha Tau Delta and was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. She received a Master's Degree in Health & Safety Studies from Cal State University, L.A., in 1975. For eleven years she worked at various hospitals, followed by thirty years as the school nurse at Long Beach City College. She retired in 1992.
Gen became a member of the PDG community in 1972. She became an avid golfer and joined the PDG Golf Club. Later, she joined the PDG Women's Bridge, Bocce Ball, and Shuffleboard clubs. She was an avid bridge and shuffleboard player until her death. She also loved music, dancing, church activities, and being with her family, relatives, and friends. The one thing in life she always wanted to do but never did was become an artist.
The people that Gen said most influenced her life were her husband Duke, her family, the Catholic Church, and Joe Coady, her dear friend of eleven years. She was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she religiously attended services.
Gen is survived by her children, Michele Capps of Big Bear City, Pamela Lewis of Thousand Oaks, and Michael Hornak of Mission Viejo; by her brothers, Michael, Joe, and Philip Chiaramonte; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her companion, Joe Coady.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m., Friday, December 14, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Palm Desert. Entombment will be at Forest Lawn Mortuary on Ramon Road, in Cathedral City at 2:30 PM.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or The Salvation Army.

Gen was a beautiful lady and loved by all. So kind, so thoughtful, always smiling and wishing everyone else happiness and good health. She was a wonderful neighbour and friend. We feel blessed to have had Gen in our lives. Our deepest sympathies to her children and families and her dear companion, Joe. We are all missing her.
