CHARLES EDWARD HAWTREY Iowa City Charles Edward Hawtrey died peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, surrounded by family. Born July 9, 1935, to the Rev. William and Ora Hawtrey, Chuck was the eldest of four brothers. A graduate of Grinnell College, Chuck met and married his college sweetheart. He earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa. During the Vietnam War, Chuck served for two years as a urologist at the Naval Hospital in Beaufort, S.C. He served as secretary and later president of the North Central Section of the American Urological Association, where he received the Golden Cane Award for outstanding contributions to the AUA. A member of Trinity Episcopal Church for over 50 years, Chuck served as Eucharistic minister to the homebound and was a faithful participant in the Tuesday morning healing prayer service for over 40 years. Chuck's hobbies included cycling, history, genealogy, writing, woodworking, home improvement projects and lively discussions. Reading the New York Times cover to cover was a favorite Sunday pastime. In recent years, he was an active participant in a weightlifting group, where the median age was 87. Chuck was predeceased by his first wife, Betsy; two younger brothers, Chris and John; nephew, Mark; and sisters-in-law, Mary, Nancy and Margie. Chuck is survived by his wife, Jo Ann; brother, Jim; five children, Cathy Riley (Bill), Beth Beasley (John), Martha Cimmarrusti (Tony), Tom Hawtrey (Claire) and Nicole Geske, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren with three more on the way. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, with livestreaming available for anyone wishing to attend, www.trinityic.org. Dr. Hawtrey was our beloved neighbor for over 15 years. We’ll miss him dearly and will think of him every time we work in the yard or shovel snow from our sidewalk (a task Chuck often completed before we could get out the door on snowy mornings) or pass a friendly neighbor on the sidewalk. We’ll miss his humor and his humility, and our hearts go out to Jo Ann and the Hawtrey family.

In 1977, Dr. Hawtrey saved my life. At the time, I hoped I would make it until 1978. I am now a 66 year old grandfather. Not only was he an incredible surgeon, he was an incredible man. His kindness and compassion was special. I think of his smile and the twinkle in his eyes often.

I was one of hundreds or thousands of Dr. Hawtrey's patients at UIHC. He is one of the reasons I am still here today. His diagnosis and surgery on me saved my life. Sincere condolences to the family.
