Kenneth Kirby Obituary

KENNETH WILLIAM KIRBY Cedar Rapids Kenneth William Kirby, 96, of Meth-Wick Community, Cedar Rapids, passed away at Mercy Medical Center on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids by the Rev. Heather Hayes. Friends may visit with the family Wednesday after 10 a.m. at the church. A luncheon will be held at the church following services. Burial will be held at a later date at Kasota Hill Cemetery, Kasota, Minn. Teahen Funeral Home and Cremation Service is serving the family. Ken is survived by his daughter, Carol Kirby Williams of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico; son, Robert (Robin) William of Cedar Rapids; two granddaughters, Jessica Irene Kirby and Megan Grace Kirby-Kane; and grandson, Richard Kane. Ken was preceded in death by his wife of 68-years, Bernice, who died in 2016; and his son-in-law, S. Reese Williams, who died June 4, 2019. Ken was born July 1, 1923, in Mankato, Minn., the son of William and Irene Moeri Kirby. He grew up and attended elementary and high school in Kasota. In high school, he excelled in music, declamation, baseball and basketball. He attended and graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1945 with majors in Chemistry and German. He joined Green Giant Co. as a chemist for eight years until entering Purdue University where he completed a masters and Ph.D. in Biochemistry. Upon graduation he joined Penick and Ford in Cedar Rapids where he remained for 32-years, with the exception of two years at R.J. Reynolds in Winston Salem, N.C., and five years at the University of Iowa in Preventive Medicine. He retired from active work in 1991 as chairman of the company. Ken married Bernice Hallman of Mankato on July 26, 1947, and enjoyed a very happy life. When Bernice became an Alzheimer patient in 2006, she lived at home with him for five years in the Meth-Wick Community. Ken found music a great diversion from science and was very active as a singer, soloist, choir member and director. He was a member of the Civic chorus and Chorale Midwest. He also did male quartette work in college, at Green Giant and at Purdue. He was a 20-year member of the New Horizons band, a former director of the Fine Arts Council, a member of the symphony board and a 55-year member of the Community Concert Board. Ken was active in publishing and wrote many chapters for texts covering starch and carbohydrate chemistry. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, TAPPI, the Institute of Food Technology, Cereal Chemistry and Textile Chemistry and the Cedar Rapids Literary Club. He was a 45-year member of the Cedar Rapids Country Club and a member and Deacon, Trustee and Elders of the First Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. Cedar Rapids. Ken enjoyed writing essays for the Literary Club ranging from science to humor and Alzheimer disease where he presented lecture material. His major accomplishment in life has been the success at getting the CDC to change the physicians handbook for completing death certificates by physicians to have an example of Alzheimer's death when diagnosed as the underlying disease. The CDC reports to Congress each year on the number of deaths and it is a way to get funding for research to cure or prevent the disease. He leaves this as a legacy for his wife, Bernice, who died of the disease and for the several million people who have yet to die and who will benefit from research funding. Memorials may be directed to the family. Online condolences can be left at www.teahenfuneralhome.com.

Even though Ken has been gone from us for the past four years, I still think of him often and miss him very much. He was an exemplary man in so many ways, especially in his tender care for his wife Bernice as she struggled with Alzheimer's disease. And he was a determined and outspoken advocate for what he believed was right, particularly in his successful effort to get the CDC to include Alzheimer's as a cause of death, so that more funding would be devoted to research on that terrible disease. Dr. Kirby was a friend, colleague, and tennis buddy of our father, Don Morgan, at the University of Iowa, and both couples spent their later years at Meth-Wick. Our parents always spoke of Bernice and Ken with great affection and admiration. When our father passed away in April 2015, Dr. Kirby cooked our family a Welsh dinner in Dad's honor. It was an act of loving kindness that we will always remember and cherish.

We are so sorry for your loss. We will make contributions to Meth-Wick and the Alzheimer's Association of Cedar Rapids in his memory. Sincerely, Bronwen, David, and Ken Morgan

Ken was a long time friend of my Dad, Donald Willmott. Ken told me that my dad and he worked together since Ken's first day at Penick and Ford. Dad helped Ken learn the ropes and settle in at Penick and Ford.

Once Dad and Ken were both at Methwick, they shared many activities together. Ken loved to fix meals and my dad was glad to eat them with him. They went to many Community Concerts and municipal concerts in the park.

Dad told us how Ken enjoyed researching topics-- like Alzheimer's and World War II veterans like my dad.

We are sorry for your loss. We think Ken was a kind, caring person who will be missed greatly.
Our deepest sympathies, Dennis and Linda Willmott

One of the nicest (in fact, Ken and Bernice were two of the nicest) persons one could ever know. I enjoyed singing with them when I directed the C. R. Concert Chorale, and it was always a treat to be around them. An especially fond memory is from a few years ago when I directed a Coe alumni choir at Homecoming, and Ken brought Bernice so they could both be a part of the reunion. The world desperately needs more people like the Kirbys. Sincerely, Allan Kellar

I knew him and his wife through several organizations that my parents are grandparents were in. They were both very nice people and I know he will be missed in the community as well as his family. The importance of shining light on this horrible disease hopefully will help others in the future! Thank you Ken for your tireless work on this issue.

Ken and Bernice were long-time family friends who were cherished by our family. Ken spoke at my dad's funeral two years ago and touched us all with his tribute. To Bob and Carol, may God comfort you now. Your dad was an amazing, talented, kind and generous man.

Peace and comfort to all who loved him and there are many. I will miss Ken, the noble, kind gentleman that I was blessed to know 50 plus years. He was a remarkable person and a great role model for me in my childhood. He cherished his family, loved his church, his music and had many intellectual interests that he would share with others. I admired how he took care of his wife, Berniece, all her life but most impressively when she had Alzheimers. He will be missed. ❤

I'll never forget standing by Ken at a party and listening to him hum part of the coming Sunday's anthem. He always had a smile on his face and a song in his heart. Chuck Ashford

I am so sorry we cannot make it to the funeral. Ken and Bernice were long time family friends. We wanted them to sing for our wedding, but that is when they moved south. I remember babysitting for you. We are going to miss Ken. We always had invigorating conversations. He was a remarkable man.

Ken was a grand gentleman, one of the kindest and most caring people I have ever known. Singing beside him in the choir at First Presbyterian Church of Cedar Rapids gave me great joy and pleasure. His devotion to his wife Bernice was inspiring. I am grateful to have known him.
