Audrey Scott Obituary

AUDREY W. SCOTT Iowa City Audrey W. Scott (Stewart) died peacefully in Iowa City Thursday, June 13, 2019, at the age of 92. She is survived by her children, Charles, Janet (Evans) and Ian and Kim (Havel), all of Iowa City. There also are five grandchildren in Iowa City and Washington, Iowa. Audrey was born Sept. 19, 1926, in Birmingham, England, to James (M.D.) and Margaret (R.Ph.) Stewart. She trained as a nurse at Guys Hospital in London and completed her R.N. training in 1950. During that time, she met Sydney Scott and, when they finished their training in psychiatric nursing, she followed him to Ontario, Canada, then to Baltimore, Md. They married there on July 30, 1955. In 1958, Sydney followed a co-worker to the Mental Health Institute in Clarinda, Iowa, and the family moved to the southeast corner of Iowa from the metropolitan East Coast. At that time, Audrey started working part time in labor and delivery in Clarinda. In 1967, with their three children, they moved to Iowa City for Sydney to complete his Bachelor of Nursing. After he passed suddenly in 1976, she began to work full time and finished raising the children alone. She worked as a nurse/midwife in the obstetrics departments of both Mercy Hospital and the University of Iowa Hospitals for many, many years, finally retiring in 2000. Audrey always was learning and creating. She returned to school and completed her Bachelor of Science from the College of St. Francis in 1986. She furthered her education with many workshops and conferences about delivery and neonatal care. She loved photography and learned to process and print negatives. That turned into a love of painting with oils and watercolors. If that wasn't enough, there was reading mysteries, going to plays, gardening and many travels to Europe to see relatives and sightsee. She threw parties at the house on Grant Street and went out often with her many nursing friends. She filled her retirement time with her friends and more travel, and especially enjoyed volunteering at the Crisis Center Food Bank, which she did until 2015. Our mother lived a long, enjoyable life, always was positive about herself and all people, and was a wonderful, supportive mother to her children. Audrey donated her body to the Deeded Body Program at the University of Iowa. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City, where she was on the Altar Guild, on Wednesday, June 19, at 11 a.m. Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to CommUnity (formerly the Johnson County Crisis Center Food Bank) in her name.

Audrey and I often went to book club and altar guild together. When she hosted the book club, her food was fabulous! We always enjoyed discussing the various books. The last few years we haven't seen much of each other as we aged, but always had warm thoughts and memories of her. As her obituary stated, what a lot of things she accomplished in her life. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.
