Attila MIKLOSHAZY Obituary

BISHOP ATTILA MIKLÓSHÁZY, S.J. 1931 - 2018 Attila Miklósházy, a Jesuit priest and bishop, died on Friday, December 28, 2018 at René Goupil House (Jesuit Infirmary) in Pickering, Ontario. Attila Miklósházy was born in Hungary in 1931, entered the Society of Jesus in 1949 and left Hungary during the revolution of 1956. He was ordained priest in Toronto in 1961. He taught theology at Loyola College, Montreal, 1963-64, at Regis College, Toronto, 1968-1974, in the Faculty of Theology of the University of St. Michael's College, Toronto, 1974-1984, and at St. Augustine's Seminary, Toronto, 1984-1998. In 1989, he was appointed titular Bishop of Castelminore for the spiritual assistance of the Hungarian emigrants throughout the world. He was member of the National Liturgical Council of the Canadian Bishops, and of the Canadian Liturgical Society (ecumenical). He also participated for 15 years in the Anglican/Roman Catholic Theological Dialogue in Canada. After his retirement as Professor emeritus of Systematic Theology and Liturgy, he continued his episcopal duties by visiting the various Hungarian communities around the world. He spent his time in recent years, translating Jesuit texts and the talks of Pope Francis into Hungarian. Attila was admired, loved and appreciated by many. Visitation on Wednesday, January 2nd, 2 - 4 p.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 432 Sheppard Ave. E., Toronto M2N 3B7, followed by Mass in Hungarian at 4 p.m., then over to St. Ignatius Chapel, Manresa-Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Centre, Liverpool Road North, Pickering L1X 1V4 for visitation from 7 - 9 p.m. with prayer service at 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, January 3, 2019, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Cathedral, Toronto. Interment at St. Augustine's Seminary, Toronto immediately after the Mass. Donations can be made to the Jesuit Advancement Office, 43 Queen's Park Crescent East, Toronto, M5S 2C3.

Bishop Mikloshazy taught me a couple of courses at St. Michael's College. He had a mind like an encyclopedia. He was also very kind and loyal to the Church. He will be sadly missed in the theological community of Toronto.
