Janette WHITE Obituary

JANETTE HUNTER WHITE BA Toronto; MS Columbia; Professor Emerita Faculty of Information and Media Studies University of Western Ontario Born in Toronto, August 6, 1921, the daughter of Canadian author, Samuel Alexander White and Vennie Giffen. Died in Hamilton, November 27, 2018. Predeceased by sister, Marion and brothers, Beverley and Dalton White. Cherished aunt of Roger, Heather (Tarrison), Cheryl (Ennals), Peter, Ted, Laurie (Clark), Jeff, Brian, Doug and Jan White. Janette had a long and accomplished career in the field of libraries and information studies. She served as Reference Librarian at Toronto Public Library and the Education Centre Library and was a founding member of the UWO School of Library and Information Science faculty where she taught and served in the administration until her retirement. Admired by family, friends, colleagues, and students, Janette fostered an appreciation of education, travel, and the arts and culture in those she met. Five generations of the White family, their friends and families, always found a warm welcome at the ancestral home for both short and long stays. Open minded, accepting of others, bright and curious, cheerful, gracious, and generous, she was indeed a 'woman for all ages.' I was so sorry to hear recently of Jan's death. I met Jan through a mutual friend when I was a student at UWO and remained a friend throughout her long life. We had many good times together including trips to Bermuda, the Caribbean and England. In her later years we attended many musical events together. What a delightful woman she was with wide and varied interests, a warm and caring personality and a sense of curiosity that she enjoyed throughout her life. My sincere condolences to her nephews and nieces in their loss.

When I joined SLIS as a new faculty member in the early 1980s, Janette was a wonderful administrator, mentor, and model. Her sense of humour and steady good sense was an inspiration to colleagues and students alike.

I was both a student and collegue of janette from 79 til she retired and thought the world of her. She was truly a caring and compassate woman who besides being smart and capable was just really, really nice.

Deepest symapthy to all her family and friends ... and know you will eventually like I, continue to have a big smile when ever you think of her

How sad! Janette was my first boss at SLIS at Western; she was kind, gracious and so funny. A great mentor to a young woman in her 20's. We will miss you Janette!
