Donald HENDERSON Obituary

DONALD JAMES "Jim" HENDERSON August 7, 1940 - May 2, 2020 Jim passed away peacefully on May 2, 2020 at the age of 79 after a long struggle with complications due to Parkinson's disease, and then COVID-19. He is survived by his wife Karen (Santolini), his children James, Chris, and Kevin, his grand-daughter Iris, his sister Carol (Beattie), and nieces and nephews Bob Beattie, Jane King, and Ann Patton, and Bill, Sandy and Tracey Henderson. He was born in Sudbury, his family moved to Toronto in the early 1940s, where he resided for most of his life. Jim had a life-long interest in public and current affairs, and was elected as the Member of Provincial Parliament for the riding of Humber (renamed Etobicoke - Humber), for three terms, ranging from 1985 to 1995. He served as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Ministers of Community and Social Services, Colleges and Universities, and for the Provinces' Anti-Drug Strategy, and then as the Official Opposition Critic for Culture and Communications. Both before and after his terms in politics, he was a medical doctor, in particular, a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. He served as the Director of Psychiatry at the former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital, and then the Director of Psychiatric Services at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie. After these roles and in addition to private practice, he was an Assistant and then Associate Professor at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, and Psychiatrist in Chief at the University of Toronto Student Health Services. Both during and after leaving politics, Jim developed a special interest in developing countries in the Caribbean, including organizing and leading trade and medical delegations. He subsequently became fluent in Spanish, and was a guest lecturer at the University of Havana, where he assisted in the re-introduction of the study and practice of psychoanalysis in Cuba. He was educated at the University of Toronto Schools, and the University of Western Ontario, where he became a medical doctor. He pursued post-graduate training at Johns Hopkins University, where he obtained a Master's degree in Public Health, and Diploma from the American National Board of Medical Examiners. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada, and then obtained a Diploma in Psychiatry from the University of Toronto (where he graduated as the Gold Medalist). He subsequent obtained a Certificate and became a Fellow of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the American Psychiatric Association, respectively. As a psychiatrist, his specific focuses were in parenting, children, and community care, including practicing in remote aboriginal communities, in particular, in Bella Coola (a remote community 1000 km north of Vancouver). These areas of interest were the subject of numerous addresses, media presentations, educational seminars, and more than twenty-five academic publications. He had a love of the wilderness and outdoors, serving for several years in his teens and twenties as an out-trip canoe guide at Camp Ahmek in Algonquin Park, and then Camp Temagami in northern Ontario. A celebration of his life will be held a later date due to physical distancing requirements imposed during the present COVID-19 state of emergency. A small ceremony will be held for immediate family. I first met Jim (and his wife Karen, with whom I had the pleasure of speaking Italian) while assisting with his 1985 political campaign. He was that rare person who entered politics not for his own benefit, but for that of others- something which obviously governed his personal life, as well. Of all of the politicians I've ever known, Jim was truest to himself.

The Consul General of Cuba, Tania Larocque, has asked me, as the former Co-ordinator and President of the Canadian Cuban Friendship Association (CCFA), to convey deepest condolences from the people of Cuba to Jim's family and friends, upon his passing. Jim was a well- recognized friend of Cuba and manifested this friendship with an effective and generous spirit through actions which benefited its people. He had met with Fidel Castro, was a guest lecturer at the University of Havana and shall be remembered by the many whose lives he touched.

Wonderful memories of Jim during his election campaigns and his stint as MPP. Karen too. Never to be forgotten by his many many friends, and certainly by his political friends.

Dear Karen and family,
My sincere condolences to you.
Jim was a good friend and esteemed colleague of mine at Sunnybrook.
He was a very intelligent, competent psychiatrist who wrote two excellent contributions to the literature.
He was the only Canadian to contribute to the leading textbook in Psychiatry, Freedman and Kaplan. He also wrote a remarkable article about the function of a father in children's development.
We will all miss him.

I served with Jim at Queens Park. I was always struck by his commitment to serving his constituency, province and country. He approached all issues from principle and those principles always guided him even when he had to take a position which was not necessarily where others were going. It was a pleasure and privilege to know him. My condolences to his family.

Although we came from different political parties Jim and I shared the belief that we were elected to do the best for our fellow men. We rarely disagreed with each other and supported each other on most occasions in the Legislature. Jim was a kind intelligent caring human who gave so much to all of us in his lifetime. I shall always fondly remember him. Thank you to his family for sharing him so that he could help make our Province a better place to live.

Karen, I am thinking of you during this difficult and sad time. As a psychologist, I have worked with many psychiatrists, but Jim stands out for his intellect, creativity, leadership, warm personality and humanitarianism. I worked with you and Jim in the outpatient department of the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital, where you two met. Jim made that department inspiring and creative. Such an active mind !! My husband David and I still remember the department at his cottage. Ironically I was looking at some of the pictures from that gathering only a few days ago. I know that you married and had children, and I knew that Jim had entered political life. But I was astounded by his other outstanding accomplishments noted in the Globe and Mail. What an interesting life you and he had. He has died too young and I can only imagine the grief you and your family are now suffering. My condolences.

We are so sorry for your loss. Jim was a kind, gentle and determined man with an illustrious career stopped too soon by Parkinson's. May he rest in peace.
