PETRO SYDORENKO Obituary



PETRO SYDORENKO (MAY 16, 1926 - MAY 6, 2007)
Beloved husband of 53 years of Kateryna (née Wasyliw), loving father of daughter Halyna, son Wasyl and daughter-in-law Nadia, and cherished grandfather of Natalia and Petro. The youngest of ten children, Petro Sydorenko leaves behind an extended family in Ukraine. Petro was born in Ternovatka (Kryvy Rih), Ukraine to Semen and Varvara (née Tkachenko). He survived the Holodomor Great Famine (1932-1933) and Ostarbeiter Camps in Germany during WWII. In 1952 he came to Canada where he graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1955 (AOCA). He was employed as a technical illustrator for 35 years with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. Petro was active as an artist and teacher of art in the Ukrainian-Canadian community for many years. He founded his own art school, exhibited in Canada and the USA, illustrated numerous publications, and was a founding mem ber of the Ukrainian Association of Visual Artists of Canada (1956). His artwork can be found in private collections and art galleries throughout Canada. For more than 30 years Petro struggled with Multiple Sclerosis and for the last 3 years he was a resident of the Hellenic Home for the Aged. Family and friends will be received at the Cardinal Funeral Home, 92 Annette Street (near Keele), on Monday, May 7 and Tuesday, May 8 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Panakhyda Monday and Tuesday 7:30 p.m. The Orthodox Rite of Funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 9 at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral (404 Bathurst St.) at 10 a.m. Interment Prospect Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ukrainian Canadian Research and Documentation Centre , 620 Spadina Avenue , Toronto , ONM 5 S 2 H 4 , or to St. Volodymyr Cathedral would be appreciated.
