From PCVS to Ottawa to Bay Street our paths crossed over and over. Always engaging, introspective and open. David will reside in my memory until my turn arrives.

My deepest condolences to the Smith family. I fondly recall outings with David and Heather over the years, particularly his love of cooking for guests and his love of politics, but above all else, his love of family. God Bless.

We remember fondly our walk around London led by David wearing his t shirt sandals and flowered shorts. And how he persuaded a very snooty English maitre de in a tuxedo to let us all into that restaurant for dinner.
Our condolences to you Heather.

Our deepest condolences to the family of Senator David Paul Smith.
Very sociable and likable gentleman, people who had the pleasure of meeting him can vouch for that.
Senator Smith was a strong advocate of Human Rights and critic of oppressors which proves he had a high standards of keeping the world safe.
May he rest in peace.

My condolences to David's family, I have been on many trips with Senator Smith to Paris to attendent the NCRI (National Council of Resistance of Iran) meetings for a free Iran. He was thoroughly a gentleman and cared deeply about democracy and human rights in Iran, his presence was a source of inspiration to us all.He will be missed, but we will continue his legacy to fight for a free and democratic Iran.

A loss to Canadian society. As a politician, his door was always open, took the time with me when I was interested in an assistant's job. RIP, thanks.

David was a valued mentor of mine, in particular when I decided to seek the federal Liberal nomination in Etobicoke North in 1996, and then again when I decided to retire in 2008. On both occasions he gave freely and spontaneously of his time, and of his wise advice - which I respected and successfully followed. He had a bias for action like few others, but there was always time for a laugh. His impact is far-reaching. May he rest in peace.

to the Family of David's
We pray that this poem which looks at death from a different vantage point may provide some sympathy to the family at this sad time. Bob Coffey
Gone from My Sight
I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads its white sails to the morning breeze
and starts for the blue ocean.
It is an object of beauty and strength
and I stand and watch it at length.
It hangs like a speck of white cloud
just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says: There, it's gone
Gone where? Gone from my sight that is all.
It is just as large in mast and hull and spar
as it was when it left my side:
and just as able to bear its load of living freight
to the place of destination.
Its diminished size is in me, not in it;
and just at that moment when someone at my side says:
There, it's gone!, there are other eyes watching it coming
and other voices ready to take up the glad shout
Here it comes!
And that is dying.

Well done, David... You spread your light and contagious joie de vie with all who knew you... Thanks for your warm, faithful friendship over + 60 years, since teenage camp-outs at Shawnigan Lake, Vancouver Island, to university days at Carleton, including the unforgettable photo shoot with Lester B :-), to Christmas '63 in Washington, DC, with the Bowering clan, sharing the joy of Black gospel music at the AME church. Fast forward to more recent visits in Toronto, treating the Bowering sibs to your home-cooking in July '11 (...who spontaneously responded by singing the Grace in 4 part harmony!), and then in Nov '14, recounting your first hand experience of the shooting on Parliament Hill with the congregation at St. Mark's Anglican, Kingston. A storyteller par excellence, you captivated us with accounts of your adventures over a lifetime of public service, until we simply could not take in yet another of "David's stories"! Your irrepressible spirit will live on among those who knew and loved you.
With much love to Heather, George, Bob and all the family,

A great friend, ally, gentleman, always cheerful, with strong conviction for human rights, wanting to see a free and democratic Iran in his lifetime, will be missed. All in the Iranian Diaspora are mourning his loss and sympathize with his extended family. Countless memories accompanying him in several trips to Paris to support NCRI's platform for human rights.

To The Smith Family:
A great person has been called to his heavenly home. George was a classmate of ours at Peterborough, Bob was our pastor at LGT for 9 years. A.C. taught us while in Peterborough so there were connections with the Smith family.
May God keep and sustain each one during these days.

I knew the young David, a joyful member of the band in the 60s at Peterborough Collegiate & Vocational School. Always a twinkle, always a good friend and always in tune! And the same guy when I bumped into him in Toronto years later. Warm memories of David and those times.
