MARY ELIZABETH 'BETH' DINGMAN (NEE PATERSON) JANUARY 27, 1918 MAY 3, 2010 Passed away at Toronto General Hospital in her 92nd year. She will be greatly missed by her sister Joan Walker, daughter Erica Dingman Scheinblum, son-in-law Scott Scheinblum, grandchildren Ian and Allegra and her nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Harold Dingman. Born in Kingston, Ontario, she grew up in Winnipeg with her five sisters, summering at Malachi. Graduating from the University of Manitoba, her career as a journalist started at The Winnipeg Free Press. While at the Montreal Gazette as the hotel and rails reporter she interviewed luminaries such as Fiorello LaGuardia. Returning to Winnipeg she was hired by the Hudson's Bay Co. where she was the assistant editor of the Beaver and editor of the Moccasin Telegram. Her love of the Canadian north and Inuit remained with her always. After working briefly at the CBC, she was hired by the Toronto Telegram as a columnist and Women's Editor. She renamed the section to Lifestyles to broaden the content and increase readership. At the Tely she covered such events as Queen Elizabeth's Royal Tours. Af ter the paper closed, Beth became editor of the Canadian Society of Decorative Arts Bulletin and later Fu sion magazine and Reach for the Top. Independent to the end, Beth lived life the way she saw fit allowing no one to dictate how she conducted her affairs. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
