Dr Andrew McLeod
July 24, 2024
I realise that this is far too little, far too late, but news travels slowly, if it travels at all on this side of the pond. 'Zip', for I never thought of calling him anything else was my first research mentor when he worked on sabbatical at the Will Rogers Hospital in Saranac Lake, NY, in the summer of 1970. He brought with him his energetic research assistant, Betty Brown, and Freda, his wife, and his two boys, Larry and Benjie. Zip was hugely intelligent, formidably knowledgeable, fun, interesting, and inspirational. Hospitality provided by Freda when we escaped the hospital was generous too. I played tennis with Zip, Larry, and Ben. I remember this seemingly trivial detail because when at the net, Larry, then a young teenager I think, suddenly hit the ball so hard I could not get out of the way. The scar may still be there somewhere. Zip also insisted that at the end of his tenure I should accompany him and his family to Hamilton to get some insight into what he called 'Canada's banana belt' (having come from Winnipeg this was probably a fair generalisation). He generously took me to the Stratford festival, gave me an old car to drive around in, and later in my career I returned twice to McMaster to work in immunohaematology and immunochemistry. I remember Zip with huge affection and mourn his passing. I am Andrew McLeod, and surprisingly I became a cardiologist. You can read a bit about me by searching the 'Evening Hill Diaries' on the web. But compared to the contribution Zip made to medicine, I am a nonentity!

In 2018 and 19 I had the great pleasure and learning experience of working with Dr. Zipursky on a video about Rh Disease. This took us to Stanford University, a partner in the project and many meetings at Sick Kids, where Alvin maintained an office many years after his "retirement". I also visited his away place in Florida and we enjoyed our time together enormously. My involvement as producer/director lasted about a year and a half. It was sponsored, in part, by my brother, Jim Fleck CC, also in his 90th year. I am a Mac alum, '60 and am grateful to have come into Alvin's life and greatly admire his vitality and dedication even as he approached 90 years of age. He will remain in my memory as a positive influence and friend.

Zip was my first research mentor, 45 years ago. He was a brilliant, kind, and happy man. He had a huge positive impact on his colleagues, trainees, and patients.

Zip was someone I met when he was started the Programme for Global Paediatric Research, and I was a new faculty member at Sick Kids. Zip was always warm, engaging, and had lots of wonderful questions and ideas. He was always gracious with his time and his ideas. And he was the consummate gentleman. I'll miss Zip and his sage advice. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Zip was my mentor and a friend. He co-directed my BSc (Med) research program at UM medical school almost 60 years ago. He also provided me with precise career counselling that resulted in my academic career, for which I have been forever grateful. I will always remember his friendly smile and easy going manner. He made an impact throughout all of his many pursuits. My condolences to his family, colleagues and friends.

Zip was one of the most brilliant, effective , charming and hilarious
friends and I shall miss him in our world but what a legend in his
own time. The wonderful medicine he practiced touched so many!

I admire my cousin for all that he has achieved on behalf of children all over the world. He was also devoted to his family and had a wonderful sense of humor.

Merle and I are deeply sad to hear of Alvin's passing. Although he was my first-cousin there was a substantial age difference between us. From the time I was bar mitzvahed until as recently as 2 years ago we would visit at family events or just in Toronto when my travels brought me there. Our visits went by very quickly as we shared family memories for hours on end. We will miss him very much.

When I read the profile of Alvin Zipurksy, and the comments posted here from family, friends, and co-workers, I think, first of all a star has fallen, and secondly what a life well lived! How could this one human being contain so many multitudes? An innovator, a visionary, a mensch, and a man with a trifecta of intelligence, humour and warmth.
May his memory be for a blessing. Lesley Simpson

I worked for Dr. Zipursky briefly in the late 1990s. Even though I knew him only a short time, I've never forgotten the sense of fun and joy he brought to his work and relationships. He was a brilliant and kind man, and will be missed by many, many people. A life well and fully lived.

Dr. Zipursky was truly one of the kindest people I was ever privileged to meet. I was lucky enough to be a nurse working on the Haem/onc floor at Sick Kids when he was there. When I decided to apply to medical school he wrote me the most generous letter of support - I'm sure one of the main reasons I got in. He will be greatly missed. A true hero.

A scholar and a gentleman whose mentorship, academic and administrative achievements benefited so many children in Canada and around the world whether they suffered from Rh disease, haemoglobinopathies, leukemias or other disorders. The paediatric world has lost a giant from its community!

My hero. Uncle Alvin the world is such a better place for your time here and a sadder place for your loss.
