Barbara SULLIVAN Obituary

BARBARA ANN PICKARD SULLIVAN It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Barbara Ann Pickard Sullivan. She left us peacefully on her 78th birthday, Sunday, January 24, 2021, at the Emmanuel House Hospice in Hamilton after a brief battle with cancer. Barbara was a remarkable person. She attended Munn's one room schoolhouse in Oakville, later teaching Sunday School at Munn's United Church. In her youth, she was an active member of 4-H and won many awards for showing the family's sheep and Holstein cattle across Canada and beyond. Barbara studied journalism at Carleton University, where she edited the student newspaper and was active in the Canadian University Press. Her first job was a reporter for the Toronto Telegram where she covered community life and local events. In her early professional life, she was a public affairs consultant advising on communications strategy. Barbara served as the principal secretary and chief of staff to the Treasurer of Ontario, the Right Honorable Robert Nixon, during the early 1980s. This experience led to a successful campaign to become Liberal Member of Provincial Parliament in the riding of Halton Centre. She served for two consecutive governments from 1987 to 1995 under Premier David Peterson and in opposition under Premier Bob Rae. During Barbara's first term she chaired the government caucus, chaired the Select Committee on Energy, and was Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Labour. During her last term Barbara was the official Opposition Critic for the Environment, followed by three years as the official Opposition Critic for Health and a member of the Board of Internal Economy. Her children still giggle about the time she was escorted out of the Legislature by the burly Sargeant-at-Arms, all five feet of her, for a rare but feisty Parliamentary intervention. Following her time as MPP, Barbara became a member of the Board of Directors of the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation, and subsequently Chair of the Board. At the same time, Barbara was the Chair of the Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council which did extensive research and annually advised the Minister of Health on matters related to the regulation of the health professions in Ontario. In the last decade, Barbara was a Vice Chair and Director of Ontario's Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority, a Governor of Mohawk College, Director of the Bay Area Health Trustee Corporation, and Director and Treasurer of the Ontario Association of Former Parliamentarians. She was also a frequent speaker at universities, health systems and public affairs conferences. Barbara was a person of wide-ranging interests. She served as director and vice-chair of Bird Studies Canada for over a decade, board member of Parks Canada and of Oaklands Regional Centre, a residential facility serving developmentally disabled adults. She was Chair of the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, a patron of Sheridan College's Performing Arts program, and Commissioner and Acting Chair of the Commission on Election Finances in Ontario. Barbara also represented Canada as a United Nations Presidential Election Observer in Slovakia in 1999. Barbara was an avid gardener, recently granted a Trillium award from the city of Hamilton for her home gardens. She read voraciously. Barbara was a talented miniaturist, constructing numerous dollhouses of her own designs. She also enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, knitting, and cooking food that was inspired by her extensive travel around the world. Barbara was the cherished wife of Jordan Gerard Sullivan and beloved mother to Anne Michele Thompson (Vince), Sandra Sullivan Keeley, Elspeth Gibson (Blake), and Jordan Sullivan (Alexandra). She will be missed by her sisters, Kathleen (Bill), Shirley (Bill), Janessa (John). Predeceased by brother, Russell (Elaine). Her six grandchildren, Annie, Parker, Ainsley, Waverly, Zoe and Jasper will miss her smile, her nifty jokes, and her wonderful musical birthday cards. Her Sullivan family and many nieces and nephews will also miss her unwavering energy and joie de vivre. Respecting the current pandemic restrictions, a celebration of her life will occur at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations in her honour may be made to 4-H Canada: https://4-h-canada.ca/donate or Hamilton Health Sciences: https://hamiltonhealth.ca/donate/.

Barbara and I were friends at Carleton, and later, in Toronto. We waged a few campaigns together in residence and in the National Federation of Canadian University Students (NFCUS). It was at one of those conferences that she and Jordan met. She was fun and funny, highly organized, and needed very little sleep! That energy clearly stayed constant throughout her exceedingly productive life. My memories of her bring a smile.
My condolences to Jordan, Anne Michele, Sandra, Elspeth, and Jordan.

My condolences to the family. I had the opportunity to work with Barbara in the late 2000s at the Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council. As someone who was wide-eyed fresh out of school, Barbara taught me how to look at things and drill down to the issues. I could still hear her say "let's blow this popsicle stand".

I was at Carleton University when Barb (as we knew her) was there. She was so smart, energetic and blunt! And funny. I am not surprised by her list of accomplishments... what a fine contribution to the world. My sympathies to Jordan and her family.

It was a shock to hear about the passing of Barbara recently. Such a hard working strong woman. It was an honour to work with Barbara in the Legislature, and later on the board of the Ontario Association of Former Parlaimentarians.

I served with Barbara on the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority Board. In her time with the RHRA she contributed in several capacities; a Director throughout, but also as Chair of the Governance and Nominating Committee, Vice-Chair and Interim Chair of the Board. Barbara was very committed to her involvement with the RHRA. I enjoyed many conversations with her over the years and appreciated, valued, and respected her opinion on matters. I will miss her smile, her witty laugh, and most of all, her wise counsel of many experienced years as we managed a changing landscape in the retirement home sector. My condolences to Barbara's family at this sudden loss in their lives.

I was so saddened to hear of Barbara’s passing. My sincere sympathies Michele to you and your family. I loved Barbara and Jordan Sullivan. When I first got involved in politics they were the people I looked up to. I was blessed to have their mentorship and later their friendship. Every meeting Barbara attended was made better by her presence and insights. She made politics fun and full of meaning and she never failed to want to find a path forward. I am so sorry that she has left us at this time. These are such hard times for so many and we so need more Barbara’s among us.

I had the good fortune to work with Barbara when I was a rookie MPP at Queen's Park. Barbara brought high energy and an unwavering commitment to the fight she fought for her community. Her devotion to public service was steadfast and inspirational. Barbara took her responsibilities seriously but never herself. I loved her laugh and the twinkle in her eye when she was contemplating making mischief for the government. I will be forever grateful for all that Barbara taught me.

Barbara and I were friends at Carleton University and I was her bridesmaid when she married Jordan. She was a an energetic, ambitious, tough-minded, caring, focused, and persevering person. I am not surprised to see her long list of accomplishments, her commitment to public service, and the remarkable list of offices that she held.
I only knew Anne Michele when she was a baby- and the only baby any of us knew. We thought she was so clever and adorable, but we had no idea how much work babies were. Barbara never missed a beat, graduating in the same amount of time as the rest of us who didn’t have babies. Only later did I realize how remarkable a feat that was.
I send my sympathy to Jordan, Anne Michele, Sandra, Elspeth and Jordan.

My sincere condolences to Mr. Sullivan, Michele, Sandra, Elspeth and Jordan. I was only 18 when I first met Barbara. She walked into our room at residence at St. Joe's, St. Michael's College with Michele in tow and said "you girls are going to have such fun"...and she was right. She was kind, generous and so full of life. I have great memories that I will cherish always. I wish all of you peace during this difficult time.

Our association with Barbara, and the Sullivan family began with the friendship established between our two sons who attended Appleby College together way back when. Our personal relationship grew through our professional work in health professions regulation initially, and then later through mutual work she and I did with the RHRA. Barbara was a most interesting conversationalist, a great cook, a force to be reckoned with, and she had a great sense of fun. She will be much missed. Our thoughts and prayers to all of the Sullivan family, Jim and Deanna (Dunsdon/Williams)

Barbara was a friend and guide in my professional musical career. A strength for me when I was daring a new career. And a model of imagination and creativity. Jordan was my hero when I was with him at Del and later Laval. Sending love from Stratford. Kelly Walker
