BRIEGER, Barbara
In her 93rd year on October 15, 2000, peacefully with her family by her bedside. She is survived by two sons, Peter and Nick, her daughters-in-law Catherine and Carolyn Whalen and four grandchildren, Peter, Tracey, Christopher and Anne-Sophie. Her later husband, Prof. Peter H. Brieger predeceased her in 1983. ;In a world of givers and takers, she was a giver, and in the land of givers, she was a giant. Her charitable and social work started upon her and her husband's arrival in Canada in 1939. Among the many organizations to which she volunteered her time were, the University Settlement, Holy Trinity Church, St. Stephen-in-the-Fields, and a number of hospitals. She also had a great interest in all aspects of art, art history and particularly, the students in the Department of Fine Art at the University of Toronto. They were frequent visitors to the family home and the ;Mud House just outside Port Hope, for faculty and student socials. Within University circles, she was also active in a number of groups, particularly the University Arts Women's Club and its Reading Group. She was a devoted wife and a loving and caring mother and grandmother. The family and her many friends treasure her memory and will miss her deeply. A Service will be conducted at St. Stephen-in-the-Field on Wednesday, October 18, 4:00 p.m. at 365 College Street West, Toronto. A reception will follow at a place to be announced in Tuesday's paper. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Peter H. Brieger Fellowship Fund, Department of Fine Art at the University of Toronto.
