Barbara WAND Obituary

DR. BARBARA IDA MARGARET WAND With sadness we announce that Barbara Wand passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 13, 2021, at the Hastings Manor in Belleville, in her 95th year. A brilliant woman, Barbara led a rich and varied life. Born in Port Hope and raised largely in Belleville, she attended Queen's University and obtained a BA (Hon.) in Psychology and Philosophy. The recipient of many honours and awards, Barbara subsequently earned an MA in Psychology from Cornell University and a PhD in Psychology from the University of Toronto. Her dissertation research, funded by the United States Office of Naval Research, was conducted at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey. Barbara practiced as a clinical psychologist in Ottawa at the Carleton and Ottawa School Boards and the Royal Ottawa Hospital. She also held an adjunct faculty appointment at Carleton University in Ottawa. In 1974, Barbara joined the then Ontario Board of Examiners in Psychology, now known as the College of Psychologists of Ontario. After serving two years as a Board member, she took a courageous step in a new direction, moving to Toronto to become Registrar of the Board of Examiners. Over the next 15 years, Barbara led an enthusiastic group of colleagues in the elevation of the regulation of psychology in Ontario, which culminated in the establishment of the College. She often expressed her deep affection towards those who contributed to this marvelous progress. In recognition of her achievements, the College sponsors the annual "Barbara Wand Seminar in Professional Ethics, Standards and Conduct." Dr. Wand was also the first non-US President of the American Association of State Psychology Boards (now known as the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards). Barbara retired to Port Hope and Cobourg, Ontario in 1996. She was also an accomplished artist and traveled frequently to the Four Winds retreat in southern France to develop her art. In her youth, she was an exceptional figure skater and also played (and was) left wing for the Queen's women's hockey team and, in retirement, she was known for extreme yoga. Barb is survived by sons, Josh (Cecilia) of College Station, Texas and Adam (Harriet) of Geneva, Switzerland and four grandchildren: Erica of Media, Pennsylvania; and Alison (Arune) of Baltimore, Maryland; Michael and Morena of Geneva, Switzerland; and Elliott, a great-grandson of Baltimore.

I had great respect for Dr Wand during her tenure as Registrar of OBEP. She was responsive to members and provided thoughtful comments. Her contribution during the development of the legislation which brought the regulation of psychology under the new College of Psychologists of Ontario was substantial. Despite having retired she continued to assist the College during the first few years in providing thoughtful advice to members. Her influence on psychology regulation was national and international and she provided a strong role model. Catherine Yarrow, Registrar, CPO, 1994-2015.

I was privileged to collaborate with Barbara both in Ontario and nationally from 1981 until she retired as CPO Registrar. We were the founding Co-Chairs of the Council of Provincial Associations of Psychologists and instrumental in establishing the Canadian Register of Health Service Psychologists for which we were founding Officers.

I had the good fortune of working with Barbara 'behind the scenes'. I came to better appreciate and experience her compassion as well as the scope of her intellectual and personal interests. She was tireless in pursuing the goal of putting professional psychology on a stronger footing. Barbara did not readily tolerate some of our colleague's arrogance and expressions of self-importance - these often met with one of her hallmark succinct sharp comments. She was modest about her own many achievements. I still have a picture of Barbara looking at me with scepticism and a wry smile as I lauded her as a colleague and a valued friend at the reception tendered by CPO on her retirement. I retain happy memories of Barbara and convey condolences to her family and close friends.

Dr. Barbara Wand was a guiding light in psychology who paved the way for CPO members to practice ethically, and uphold the professional standards and conduct for the common good. In later years during visits, we had fine conversations about her art, her travel, and her pride in psychology's contributions in a diverse society. She was a renaissance , humble woman, with a subtle sense of humour, whose impactful memory I will carry. To her family, friends, and CPO members, my deepest sympathy and condolences. Ester Cole

Barbary Wand is such a household name in our field but I really did not know much about her. Since reading of her obituary, I wish that I would have had the honor of knowing her personally. May her friends and family be blessed with found memories and find peace.
