Burton MATTHEWS Obituary



Dr. Burton Clare MATTHEWS B.S.A., A.M., PhD., DU., LLD. It is with great sadn ess that the family announces his peaceful passing on Januar y 2, 2004, in Waterloo, in his 78th year. Greatly loved husband of Lois; inspiration al and respected father of David and his wife Jan e and Tom and his wife Ellen; proud grandfather of Geoffrey, A m y, Stephen and Krist a. He will be fondly remembered by Trish Breithaupt (Matthe ws) of Calgar y and his brothers, George of Kerwood and Jim of Tillsonburg. The eldest of three boys born and raised in Middlesex County, Bur t began his academic career at the Ont ario Agricultural College . H e then went on to complete a Masters degree at the University of Missouri and a PhD. at Corn ell University. Returning to the Ont ario Agricultural College in 1952, he held v arious teaching posts in the Depar tment of Soil Science and took o v er as Head of the Depar tment in 1964. In 1966 he was appointed Vice-President Academic of the Univ ersity of Guelph and held that position until he was selected as the President and V ice-Chancellor of the University of Waterloo in 1970. Fo r the following 11 years he guided the University of Waterloo through a period of su bst antial growth and development into on e of the most respected univ ersities in the countr y. After stepping down as President, he was appointed Chair of the Ont ario Council on University Affairs by then Premier William Davis. Rising to the occasion once again, in 1983 he was selected as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guelph - a position he held until his retirement in 1988. Bur t touched m a n y lives and shaped m a n y minds. He was a quiet leader a m an who challenged us, brought out the best in ever yon e he met and pushed us to levels we would not have otherwise achieved. We thank you for that. You will be sorely missed by all. Friends are invited to share their memories of Bur t with his family a the Edward R. Good Fun eral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo on Monday, Januar y 5, 2004 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, Januar y 6, 2004 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The fun eral service will be held at St. John the Ev angelist Anglican Church, 23 Water Street Nor th, Kitchen er, on Wedn esday, Januar y 7, 2004 at 11 a.m., with The Ve n erable Rev. Dr. Neil Carver officiating. Following the service at the church, ever yon e is invited to meet with the family in The Great Hall, Village 1, University of Waterloo, for lunch and a time to visit. If you are not able to attend the service, you are most welcome to come to the reception. A priv ate graveside service will be held at Parkvie w Cemeter y, Waterloo, following the reception.
