David GAGAN Obituary

DAVID PAUL GAGAN April 11, 1940 - May 31, 2021 At home in Burlington, ON, and wrapped gently in love's arms, David took the final steps on his journey. Born David William Elliott to Gladys Elliott of Port Albert, Newfoundland, David was the chosen son of Lena Morrow and Charlie Gagan. He leaves behind a "charming family of really opinionated people" who loved him beyond words, including his wife, Rosemary and their four children, Sarah (George), Jamie (Halcyon), Rebecca (Blair), and Abby. He was also deeply loved by his grandchildren, Madeleine, Alexandra, Henry, Charlie, Van, Gus, Sam, and Leo; his sister, Andrea (Roger); his brothers, Robert Slack (Linda) and Phil Slack (Yvonne); and sister, Marilyn Slack (Peter). David will also be lovingly remembered by Dave Guthrie and Allison Barrett. David grew up in Owen Sound and attended Western University (BA and MA) and Duke University (Ph.D.). He began his career as a Canadian social historian in the history department at the University of Calgary (1966-1970). From 1970 to 1992, he was a member of the history department and served ten years as Dean of Humanities at McMaster University. From 1992 to 1995, David was Professor and Vice-President Academic at the University of Winnipeg. He ended his career at Simon Fraser University, where he was Professor and Vice-President Academic and Provost (1995-2004). David is the author of The Denison Family of Toronto 1792-1925; Hopeful Travellers: Families, Land, and Social Change in Mid-Victorian Peel County; A Necessity Among Us: The Owen Sound General and Marine Hospital, and with Dr. Rosemary Gagan, For Patients of Moderate Means: A Social History of The Voluntary Public General Hospital in Canada. But David was proudest of all of his family and his happiest moments were with them at the cottage at Sauble Beach. "To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive"-Robert Louis Stevenson A private service will be held at a later date. If you wish to make a donation in David's name, the family would appreciate a gift to Doctors Without Borders or a charity of your choice.

Rosemary and family, We are very much saddened by Dave's passing. Our sincere condolences. We have nothing but happy memories of Dave, his congeniality, his sense of humour as well as the good times we all had together in our relative youth. Both of you were amazing hosts at Sauble beach and your home in Calgary. Dave introduced Bev to Eccles cakes which has become a lifetime habit. Dave was a dynamic, entrepreneurial, lovable man who cherished his children and Rosie. He had a distinguished career as a historian and administrator. His was a life well lived and our sympathies are with all who knew him

Anne and Peter Venton have been summer friends of David, Rosemary and their Family since the 1960s at Sauble Beach. We shared many happy moments playing golf, walking on the Beach and socializing.
We will miss David and our summer visits.
We hope to continue to see Rosemary and his children and his grandchildren at "The Beach".
Our condolences go out to Rosemary, his children and grandchildren and sister.

As historian for the Denison family cemetery St John's on the Humber, I would like to express our sincere condolences for your loss. David's book on the Denison family is a fabulous encapsulation of our history. Each copy is treated like a family heirloom that gets passed from generation to generation. His work had a huge impact and helped us know who we are.

Thank you David.

I wish to extend my sincere condolences to Rosemary and family on David's passing. I enjoyed both my relationship with David during his time as Dean of Humanities at McMaster and our social interaction subsequently. He lived a full life and left a memorable legacy as a historian, senior academic leader and family man.
