Gerald WOOD Obituary

GERALD N WOOD It is with great sadness that we announce that Gerry Wood, 76, passed away on July 12, 2021, surrounded by love and compassion after a brief battle with cancer. Gerry is survived by the love of his life, his wife Benita Warmbold, and his pride and joy, son Richard, as well as his brother-in-law and sister-in- law, Bruce and Karen, niece Kristin (Michael), nephew Michael (Cayton), their children Hagen and Brooks, and his sister Margaret. Gerry came to Canada 52 years ago from England with plans to use his CPA designation to work while travelling the world. He started in Toronto and never left. Gerry had a long and successful career including roles as Treasurer of Kidd Creek Mines and CFO of Connaught Laboratories, finishing his work life passionately managing the business affairs for the Sisters of St. Joseph. Gerry was an avid Blue Jays fan and had fond memories of the two World Series wins, sharing many historical facts and figures. Gerry loved to run, train hard, and spend time on the ski hill. However, his true happy place was at the cottage surrounded by family and friends from all generations with a Bobcaygeon beer in hand, creating great memories for all. Bridge was Gerry's true intellectual passion. He was a Ruby Life Master, and spent endless hours developing and perfecting bidding conventions with his playing partners, thriving during tournaments and most recently enjoying the online bridge world. Gerry was known for his sense of humour, infectious laugh, strong intellect, sense of adventure, and total unwavering commitment to Benita and Richard - he was and will always be their rock. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. The family sends their heartfelt thanks to everyone who provided invaluable support to Gerry, Benita, and Richard in recent weeks. Gerry received special care from the doctors and staff at St. Michael's Hospital over the past years and particularly in the last few weeks. The family is grateful for Dr. Steeves who supported Gerry with care, compassion and commitment to be at his best while living with spinocerebellar ataxia over the last decade. A special thanks to Kevin, Ann, and Maria for their dedication to Gerry in his final years. Donations in Gerry's name may be made to Innocence Canada, an organization Gerry was very passionate about. A small private service will be held.

Gerry was my bridge partner for about 10 years. He was an excellent student of the game - always trying to learn and improve. At the bridge table, Gerry was always calm and pensive. He was well liked, but feared by most of his competitors. Gerry will be missed by many!

I Maria Reyes was Mr. Gerry Wood’s Personal Support Worker (PSW) and was proud to work and assist Mr. Wood in his areas of need.

Gerry Wood was a wonderful person who I had the pleasure of caring for. He had a great sense of humour and was a family-oriented man.

I remember him playing games at the computer with his friends or checking up on events in the news. He would also chat with family members on his tablet.

I fondly recall him asking me to address him as ‘Sir” which I did as out of respect for him. Mr. Wood was always complimentary towards me giving me various appreciative comments. He was always easygoing and easy to accommodate and I shall miss him.

To his family I offer my most sincere condolences and as stated, I shall miss him.

With heart-felt condolences,

Maria Reyes
