Graeme MACLEOD Obituary

GRAEME MACLEOD, P.Eng June 9, 1930 - December 4, 2020 Today, a good man left us. Graeme loved his family and his profession. He was renowned for his calm, practical and unflappable approach to the challenges of life. Born in Anyox, B.C., Graeme grew up in Nkana in the Zambian Copperbelt. He went to the University of Capetown, where he met his wife Paddy. The new couple moved to Canada in 1954 and settled in West Vancouver in 1956. Graeme's engineering career spanned over 60 years. He ran Macleod Geotechnical Ltd. for 25 years and then continued working to the last weeks of his life. He had vast geotechnical knowledge of the lower mainland, having worked on all the major projects in B.C. over the last half century, including the Courthouse complex, SFU campus, Expo 86 lands, Museum of Anthropology, Port Mann bridge (original), Patullo bridge, Golden Ears bridge, YVR, and many more. Graeme loved his garden, travels to Italy, and was a keen supporter of the arts. He is greatly missed by his wife Paddy, children Dinny (Mike), Martin (Lynn), Patricia and Christopher (Veronica), 5 grandchildren (Michelle, Jessica, Brandon, Valerie, Nicholas) and 1 great-grandchild (Ty). Graeme died peacefully at home with his family by his side. Many thanks to the B.C. Cancer Agency, North Shore Palliative Care team and Hero Home Care. A family service is being held now and a larger service will be held at a future date when safely permitted.

My deepest condolences to the MacLeod family. I had the privilege of working with this exceptional and honourable man over the last two years. Every time he swung by my desk for technical discussions, I looked forward to it because I could always learn something useful from him. At 90 years of age, his passion for geotechnical engineering never faded, and it honestly felt like he never took his foot off the gas. He was charismatic, knowledgable, humble, and witty. Furthermore, he exuded a well-balance lifestyle which I personally believe played a major role in his career success and longevity.

Not only was he a leader in our industry, Graeme is an example to all high-achieving professionals who seek success in their chosen field of expertise, particularly for his unrelenting drive to achieve excellence. I am proud to say that he helped me obtain my P.Eng. designation, and I am forever grateful for it.

May he Rest In Peace.

It was always a pleasure to work with Graeme. As a younger engineer I learned from Graeme how to carefully assess the site investigation problem.

My sincerest condolences to Paddy and to his family and friends. I was very fortunate to have worked with Graeme these past 13 years. His office was across from my workstation. Around 11 am, you knew it was Graeme walking down the corridor, as you could hear him whistling or humming a tune and you could sense, without seeing, the spring in his step. He was so spry, sharp, and kind. Always courteous, he was a true gentleman. I admired how he mentored the young engineers and was always patient with them - always gladly imparting his knowledge and offering sage advice. Just as he loved his work, he spoke passionately about his garden as he did when speaking to Paddy to let her know that he’d be home shortly for lunch. You heard the fondness and compassion in his voice. I’m going to miss his presence, his smile, that spring in his step, and the sound of him sharpening his pencils in that rickety ‘old’ manual pencil sharpener outside his office door. I trust that cherished memories bring comfort to his loved ones and friends. He will be missed.
