Jeffrey RUBINOFF Obituary

Artist Jeffrey Rubinoff
Passed away on January 24, 2017, at age 71, near his home on Hornby Island in British Columbia, Canada. Aware of his illness, he spent the last twelve years of his life ensuring the conservation of his work for the benefit of many generations to come. Through the establishment of The Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park on his 200 acre property on Hornby Island, more than one hundred of his large-scale stainless and corten steel sculptures are accessible to the public. The sculpture park represents five decades of Jeffrey's dedication to this medium through nine series of sculptures. Jeffrey saw the purpose of his work to 'extend the ancient narrative of art and consequently rekindle the historical spirit of modernism.' Additionally, the sculpture park hosts an annual forum that brings together interdisciplinary scholars to discuss the ideas and inspiration he gained from his art. Jeffrey believed that, 'Art is an act of will in accord with a mature conscience' and he felt that art has a very significant role to play in society as a source of knowledge. A book on his work entitled, The Art of Jeffrey Rubinoff was published in 2016 by Douglas & McIntyre.
To continue his legacy 'in the company of ideas,' Jeffrey endowed an educational programme for the sculpture park to further research the intersection of art and knowledge. Two young scholars, one post-doctoral fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge University and one PhD student at the University of Victoria, will lead the educational programme in perpetuity. Beyond his own sculpture, these fields of study were important to Jeffrey and his evolving relationship to art, art history and scientific inquiry.
Jeffrey is remembered by those who have been inspired by his work and his ideas, and mourned by his family: his partner Betty Kennedy; his daughter Leba Haber Rubinoff and her husband Jose and daughter Senya; Jeffrey's siblings: Philip, Penny and Robert, and niece, Robyn, and nephews, Daniel, Matthew and Jeremy; as well as Betty's daughter Charo Neville and her husband Craig and son, Lucien; and Betty's children and grandchildren, Megghan, Shawn, Warren, Jesse, Anthony and Sierra.

I am just learning of Jeff's passing. We met in 1970 and hadn't been in contact much after he left Toronto. Out of the blue, he called and we passed some time reminiscing. I remember it was during the summer, so it must have been just before he left. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
