I was a student at Algonquin in 1999. For some reason, John's name popped into my head today and I thought I would look him up. So sorry to learn about his passing. John was a great teacher. Engaging, funny and knowledgeable. Nothing but fantastic memories from his classes. My condolences to his family and friends.

I only just heard about John's passing from a friend, and I am very sorry to hear that he has gone. I was the beneficiary of his warmth, wit and wisdom while I was enrolled in the Public Archives of Canada Archives Course in 1983, way back at the beginning of my career as an archivist. He wrangled us efficiently but at the same time was very patient. I wasn't surprised when he left the NAC to continue teaching at Algonquin College as he seemed to have a real talent for it. His contributions to the archival profession will live on in all of his students and their memories of a fine man. My condolences to his family.

My sincere condolences go to the family and friends of John. I got to know John through his contributions to Off the Record, the newsletter of the Archives Association of Ontario (available at https://aao-archivists.ca/otr) during my tenure as Editor from 2015-2020. John was a frequent contributor to the newsletter on a variety of topics - from the history of the AAO and the archival profession in Ontario (Spring 2016, Summer 2016, Summer 2018, Spring 2019), book reviews (Winter 2018) and advocacy (Winter 2020), to a wonderful memoir piece "A Day in the Life of an Archivist in 1974" (Summer 2017). His engaging articles made the newsletter worth reading and made my work as Editor a joyful experience. I was always happy to hearing John's "pitch" for an article come into my inbox. He also was instrumental in recommending other writers to OTR, and I am forever grateful for his support of the newsletter. I hardly knew about his other accomplishments in life - but am not surprised that he made a large impact in such diverse places.

I am deeply sad to hear that John Smart has passed. I was his student at Algonquin College and I think I was in the second cohort of the program he established. He was a great teacher and I loved his sense of humour . And I would say we became colleagues after I finished at Algonquin. I was lucky enough to have served on a professional committee with him. He was extremely supportive of me during my career and I wouldn't have to go to where I am without his help. He was a wonderful human being!

A kind, wise and generous man who contributed much to the archival endeavour in Ontario in his own humble, quiet way. You will be missed by many former students and colleagues. My sincere condolences to Patricia and all his family and friends. May the many happy memories of a life well lived and of Johns accomplishments and contributions to make a better society sustain you.
