FINLAY, John Lawrence, Q.C.
Age 50, after fighting the good fight with unwavering grace, slipped away peacefully at his home in Victoria, B.C. at 9:00 p.m. on Monday, 13 August, 2001, surrounded by his family. John joined his Lord and his beloved Uncle Oscar and Aunt Bea Bunt. Survived by his devoted wife and life partner, Dr. Karen Anne Phibbs Finlay, with whom he shared the most tender kindred spirit, and his darling children, Elspeth Margaret Phibbs Finlay, just 17, and Evan Christopher Phibbs Finlay, 13. Also survived by his loving parents, Margaret Walsh Finlay and Brennan Geoffrey Finlay, and his beloved and tirelessly caring sister Patricia Gail Finlay, his brother Robert Bruce Finlay, his sister-in-law Judi Finlay and nephews Robert and Spencer, and his brother Roger Walsh Finlay and his sister-in-law Nan Skiba. Remembered with deep affection by Karen's parents Lilian Harper Phibbs and Dr. Murray K. Phibbs, for whom John was a beloved son, and sister-in-law Candace Marie Phibbs Howey and her husband Colin Howey and children Michael, Graeme and Christine, and sister-in-law Margaret Christine Phibbs Barr and her husband Colonel David Barr and children Arwen, Aislin and Ariana. Remembered also by his law partners and dear friends, Joe Arvay, Q.C. and Murray Rankin, Q.C. and his second family at Arvay, Finlay (Barristers), as well as by his loyal and loving friends John Kromkamp and Elizabeth McIntyre and their children Sarah and Virginia of Toronto and so many others of the wonderfully faithful community of friends and colleagues that John left behind in Ontario when he moved to British Columbia in 1988. ;John, it can never be the same without you; Special thanks for the exceptional health care provided by general practitioner Dr. Marek Rozwadowski and surgeon Dr. Conrad Ruznak, the Capital Health Region Nurses, especially Shelley Fletcher, the Palliative Response Team, Ona, and the many others involved in John's care. Memorial Service at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, 18 August, 2001, at St. Mary's Church, Elgin St., Oak Bay, conducted by Reverend Rob Smith, minister of Oak Bay United Church. Reception to follow at St. Mary's Church Hall. Flowers gratefully declined.
