GRAHAM, Kathleen Margaret (née Howitt)
Passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2008, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's, with much support from her caregivers and friends at her home and at Eden Manor in Toronto. Beloved wife of the late Dr. James Wallace Graham. Loving mother of John (Liz) and Janet, and devoted grandmother of James and Chris. Survived by her sister Mary Wood and her nieces and nephews Sue, Peter and Kim, John, Laura, Constance and James. Kate was born in Hamilton September 13th 1913, attended Oakwood Collegiate and Trinity College, University of Toronto. She married Wallace Graham in 1938 and became actively involved with his work with Canadian Arthritis Society, raising her children, and returning to university to study English. After Wallace's death in 1962, with the encouragement of Jack Bush, she began painting professionally. She had solo and group exhibitions in North America and Europe and her work has been featured in numerous public and private collections in Canada the USA, and the British Museum, and appeared on book covers, prints, posters, and on TV and radio. She was made an Honorary Fellow of Trinity College in 1975. Kate was passionate about her garden and got inspiration from her trips to the Arctic and Newfoundland. She lived for the summers she spent at her cottage in Algonquin Park, where she was still swimming and canoeing at the age of 92.
The funeral service will take place at TRINITY COLLEGE CHAPEL, 6 Hoskin Ave., Toronto on Saturday September 6th at 10:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Arthritis Society.
