Matthew HAMER Obituary

MATTHEW HENRY HAMER November 16, 1958 - March 25, 2021 Matthew Henry Hamer November 16, 1958 - March 25, 2021 It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Matthew; husband, brother and uncle. Matthew will forever be remembered as the kindest, funniest and most generous soul. He had a huge heart and impacted all who knew him. Matthew was born in Kenora, Ontario and moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario in 1967. He spent his childhood enjoying the NW Ontario life; skiing and exploring the wilderness at the family camp in Rossport, Ontario. A family ski trip to Banff, AB in 1976 initiated his lifelong passion for the Rocky Mountains. His career took him out west in 1981, where he worked in Fort McMurray. He moved further west when he started with an engineering firm, spending time in Nanaimo, Vancouver and Canmore. Matthew went on to pursue a highly successful 40+ year career in the oil and gas industry. Although he did not graduate from high school, his natural leadership skills and brilliant mind impressed his employers and he held vice president and management positions at several prestigious engineering firms. He was a passionate advocate for the oil and gas industry and throughout his career he took great satisfaction in mentoring many young professionals. Although his career achievements were truly impressive, he was proudest of his work with Rocky Mountain Adaptive, a charity dedicated to providing people with disabilities an opportunity to participate in mountain sports. Matthew was RMA's first volunteer and contributed countless days volunteering over the past 10 years, as a director as well as a ski instructor. In summer, he organized group hikes, coordinating young engineers with adaptive participants to challenge Rocky Mountain hikes like Ha Ling and Plain of Six Glaciers. He shared his passion for the mountains with many, many individuals living with disabilities. Eight years ago, Matthew re-connected with Suzanne Poohkay, a colleague from Matthew's secondment at UBC in the early 1990s. They fell madly in love and since then have been inseparable. Matthew was introduced to opera and Suzanne to watching fighter jets at Cold Lake. Although too short, their time together will forever be cherished. Matthew spent his free time hiking and skiing in the mountains or exploring the west coast. He also loved to travel and enjoyed some great adventures with Suzanne. He loved to read and could have earned multiple PhDs given his expertise in military history, the history of the Canadian railway and of the Rocky Mountains. Most importantly, Matthew loved to share stories and laughs with his family and close friends. Matthew leaves behind his loving wife, Suzanne Poohkay, sister Shelagh (Chris Wrazej - 'brother from another mother'), brothers Michael (Lorena) and Charles along with his nieces Jessica (Bob) Moody, Madeleine Wrazej, Linnea Wrazej and Ivy Hamer and his nephew Luke Hamer. He is pre-deceased by his father Jack, mother Lillian, brother Marc and sister Jan. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Rocky Mountain Adaptive (https://rockymountainadaptive.com/donate/).

My heartfelt condolences to all the family and friends of the truly amazing Matthew Hamer. I met him when he was the VP, Business Development for Business Development. Matthew's immediate influence and impact were so evident in how he was always ready to provide and share with others always looking for the most innovative ways to help others (everywhere) in the world! I remember a story of a young engineering graduate showing up at Rocky Mountain Adaptive asking if he could learn to ski which RMA of course was able to do! After this thrilling accomplishment for this young man he then asked Matt about any possible engineering opportunitites in Edmonton. And just like that Matthew called up my brother-in-law to secure a job even though they'd never met and voila! More of Matthew and his magic touch! When i happened to go skiing in Canmore, it was so special to run into Matt who of course was off to grace the slopes at Sunshine to help yet another important cause! Matthew Hamer's memory will never leave us and all who were met or knew him have lives that are forever brightened by his larger than life presence shining through with an over-arching huge kind heart and sense of inclusiveness and love for others. I am forever thankful for all the special examples of how elevated his conduct was towards all persons! As such a mountainous inspiration to so many he will be very greatly missed!

I have just learned of Matt's passing. So sad. We saw each other a year ago on Vancouver Island and it was great to catch up and have some laughs, which was always on the agenda with Matt. We were high school friends in T.Bay back in the 70s, lost touch but reconnected through Facebook about a decade ago. We corresponded a bit, usually related to our rather divergent views on fossil fuels. Matt was thoughtful, well read, a gentleman and someone it was always a pleasure to hear from. His grasp of history was impressive and one never interacted with Matt without learning something. So sad you are gone, old pal. Condolences to Suzanne and Matt's family.

Our deepest condolences... we are brokenhearted. We both worked with Matthew at H.A. Simons and he was a great person. I (Brian) worked with Matt on many projects and my wife Natasha got her first job in Canada working with Matt on Cajamarquilla project in the late 90s. He will be missed.

My heart broke when I recently learned of Matt's passing. He was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word.

We had a special relationship as my father was a mentor to him and Matt, in turn, was a mentor to me. When my career was at a crossroads, Matt helped me choose the correct path and continued to do so afterwards. He had a remarkable ability to know exactly what needed to be said at any given time, whether it was advice, perspective or encouragement.

I will miss Matt dearly. Much love from our family to Suzanne and the Hamer family.

I am so saddened by this news. I send my deepest condolences to Suzanne and to Matthew's family. I very much enjoyed his acquaintance -long bus rides to and from Vancouver on our weekday commutes - through which I learned of his humour, compassion and dedication to all of that and those which he cared about. Oh bless.

I first met Matt when I arrived in Canada in 2004 to work on a bid for a project at Tri-Ocean Engineering. He helped me out from day 1 and after we won the Project and I relocated to Calgary he spent time introducing me to the Mountains he loved. He was an inspiration to work with and hike with and was responsible for most of the best memories I have from the 2 years I was working in Canada. He became a great friend and will be missed with sadness but remembered with happiness.

Matthew was a kind and caring man. He inspired so many people and genuinely cared for them, their progress and achievements. He was a true leader and led by example.
My sister Suzanne was loved and cherished by Matthew. He admired her work at UBC, her professional achievements and saw her for the wonderful person she is. I loved him for that.
Matthew was a great storyteller too. When he recounted some interesting tidbit of history, it came alive. He made everyone feel special and enriched so many lives. He will be sorely missed by all those he helped and those he inspired to greatness. We will never forget him.
Love Anne-Marie and Bibbi

I am deeply saddened to hear of Matt’s passing, and will miss him dearly. Matt and I met when we were paired as part of WorleyParsons’ mentorship program. I fondly remember the chats we had over the years, especially his affinity for using examples of military history as metaphor for strategy in business. I’m grateful for the time and wisdom he shared with me. Matt’s enthusiasm and zest for life was infectious. I enjoyed volunteering with him on a number of hikes with Rocky Mountain Adaptive, and was always in awe of his passion for the mountains and helping others. Rest peacefully my friend.

Our heart breaks at the news of Matt’s passing and for Suzanne. The obituary is a moving tribute to an amazing man and friend. He elevated any meal, get together, event, or conversation. At the risk of repeating, Matt was engaging, oozed true empathy and respect, kind, fun, and funny, and a true pleasure to be around.

He is missed in so many ways and the world is a better place for him having been in it. We all so wish it would have been for longer and truly miss him and shall never forget him. The times spent with Matt and Matt and Suzanne have a special place with us and added to our lives in so many ways.

Thanks Dear Friend until we meet again.

This is a great loss of a dear, caring man with a deep intellect. More importantly, this is a loss of a true friend. Matthew and I worked together, skied together and shared many great memories. A special memory is Matthew's joy and wonder of the beauty and serenity of a fly fishing float trip I was able to take him on on on the Bow River. RIP dear friend.

My cousin Matthew had a zest for life that was truly inspiring. He was charitable and ambitious. He saw opportunities to find joy and appreciation in so many moments of life and consistently shared them with us all - lifting our spirits and inviting us to enjoy them with him. We will miss all he did to enrich the lives of so many, but our memories of his way of being will motivate us to pick up his torch and carry it on.

My thoughts are with all who are missing him, but especially with his wife, Suzanne. You were so fortunate to have found each other and I hope that the many fond memories of your time together will continue to bring you comfort.

Matthew was a rare individual. Bright, inquisitive, and giving. I knew Matthew from his days in the EPC world, and his work with Rocky Mountain Adaptive. He always impressed me with his analytical view of the world’s challenges, and his thoughtful focus on solutions. May his family rest knowing that he made a difference in this world.

I never got the chance to meet Matt in person, but we became fast friends (along with being cousins) on Facebook. We chatted many times about the possibility of meeting when the border reopens, but now I will have to wait to see him in Heaven, for that is surely where he went. He gave so much to others! To his lovely wife and the rest of the family, the Hoffman clan in New Mexico send our deepest sympathy and our prayers for some measure of comfort and peace. My heart is broken with this news.

To the family of Matt,

We are so sorry to hear of this unexpected loss and we are sending our sincerest condolences to you all today.

Chris met Matt at Fluor engineering in the "good ol’ days” and like so many who met Matt, they became fast friends. Time and circumstances meant that our families grew apart but we have great memories of skiing with Matt and he was a godfather to our children.

He’ll remain a special person to our family always.

With love,

Chris, Charlotte, Alex and Seb
