He made delicious waffles each year for Lisa and me. I look forward to seeing her again but will miss the discussion of his most recent idea for an invention. My condolences to the family. He was delightful company.

My sincere condolences on the death of your father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. I only found this beautiful obituary because a friend of mine posted something about Fiddler on the Roof, and it stirred deep memories for me.
I played Motel the tailor (with Peter as Tevye of course) in an amateur theatre production in Aurora in the fall of 1977. Someone else posted on that thread about Zero Mostel playing the role thousands of times, and phoning it in by the end. Peter was the exact opposite: even though he had already played Tevye countless times, it was clearly a huge joy to him to do it, and he gave that role a big bear hug every time he walked on the stage. I was 16 and didn't know anything, and it was a huge privilege to be in a production with a man who not only embodied all the beauty and pleasure that theatre can bring, but someone with such a massive talent and such a palpable, abiding love of life.
I especially remember how sweet he was to the little kids in the cast, who had to be herded just to do their basic stuff. He spent endless time with each of them, helping them with the difficult bits and telling them jokes and doing tricks, and they all adored him. I vividly remember them basically clustering around his feet, almost tripping him up as he walked around, but he appeared to love putting up with their attentions. Not just the kids either: by example and very gentle instruction, he offered acting tips in the kindest, humblest way you could imagine, always with a wry half-joke at the end of course. He made us all better, and he made us all love him. May his memory be a blessing.
PS The picture is of Peter taking a bow in Aurora, me in the blue shirt clapping.
