Robert (Bob) Vincent Carty With great love and regret we mark Bob's passing, peacefully, after a long contest with cancer, Sunday, September 21, at Ottawa Hospital (General Campus).
Born April 28, 1950, in Barrie, Ontario, son of Jack and Daphne (Avis) Carty. Survived by his mother and 3 brothers, 3 sisters. Beloved husband of Frances Elizabeth (nee Arbour) of 39 years
(September 6, 1975) and loving father of son Michael Timothy Carty Arbour, both of Ottawa.
Bob was a participant in the Toronto Archdiocese Youth Corps (YC) (1969-1972), founded by Fr. Tom McKillop. He learned skills of social communication and community building, as well gaining experience in international solidarity and exchange, with a particular engagement with Latin America.
From the moment of the military coup d'etat in Chile, in September, 1973, for eight years, Bob worked with the Latin American Working Group (LAWG), based in Toronto, contributing fact-finding and analysis to two books and many other publications, seminars and conferences. A largely self-taught specialist in corporate research and economic analysis, he provided detailed reports to several ecumenical coalitions. At the same time he was a founder of the volunteer Canadian News Synthesis Project (CNSP) which developed detailed analysis of the media in Canada.
Bob's special priority for Latin America continued in 1988, taking a leave to accompany Frances to Costa Rica and continuing journalism with reports to National Public Radio, the CBC, the Globe and Mail and many other outlets.
In 1981, Bob joined the CBC as a producer (later foreign editor and senior producer) with Sunday Morning and succeeding programs, commencing a 35 year career, crowned with a stunning range of medals, prizes and awards, including a Peabody, an Edward R. Murrow, a Gabriel, a U.N. special award and many others. His range, incisive investigative skill, human touch and humour made him a widely and deeply respected journalist among colleagues and the public.
For more than two decades Bob was an active member and leader in Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE), a founder of the International Freedom of Expression eXchange (IFEX), and part of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
Bob was a man whose faith was expressed in his commitment to justice, his work and in spirited music, as a singer, guitarist and composer, performing in innumerable community, solidarity and religious events, often with son Michael and friends.
His profound commitment to justice and community, expressed in so many ways, will be deeply missed.
The family wishes to extend sincere gratitude to Bob's personal physician, Dr. Alan Ng, and to Drs. Hsu and Sumitha Ramachandran and team at the General, for their care and attentive support.
Mass and celebration of Bob Carty's life will take place on Friday, October 3, 2014, at St. Joseph's Parish (near University of Ottawa), 151 Laurier Avenue East, Ottawa. Parking and the main Church entrance are on Wilbrod.
Service will begin at 2:00 followed by a gathering in the church basement (approximately 3:30) with music and tributes.
